Federal and New York State Arts Funding Update
by Stephen Butler,
CNY Arts Executive Director
The recently passed New York State budget for 2015 leaves intact the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) funding with approximately $35 million to be distributed in contracts for arts, culture, and heritage groups across the State. We encourage those that support NYSCA as an arts patron, as well as those that receive funding from NYSCA either directly or through the Decentralization program managed by CNY Arts, to write your State Legislators and the Governor and thank them for their support. To find out who your state legislator is, visit the New York State Board of Elections here.
The news so far is less good for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This year the President has proposed a budget cut to this agency which has already been reduced under sequestration. To learn more about the NEA and what you can do please go to the Americans for the Arts website here.

gotocnyarts.org Enters Second Year, Goes Mobile,
Receives $100,000 For Regional Advertising
The advertising campaign for gotocnyarts.org is kicking off as we enter our second year providing a regional arts calendar, highlighting events in seven counties in Central New York. By promoting the calendar and events listed through a campaign that includes print, web, TV, and radio ads, we extend the message that Central New York is home to a diverse and thriving community of arts, cultural, heritage, and entertainment offerings.
Starting in April and running through 2014, we will be promoting the calendar highlighting events in the region to residents and visitors through WCNY, syracuse.com, WSYR, and WRVO in addition to print ads in weekly and monthly publications. Also, gotocnyarts.org will be promoted at special events throughout the year including Taste of Syracuse, Utica Arts and Music Festival, and Lights on the Lake. Over the next year, CNY Arts will continue to promote and market our region's arts and entertainment offerings through new media partnerships and our gotocnyarts.org platform which now includes a mobile-friendly version, so visitors can look for events on the go. If you are an arts, cultural, heritage organization, or an individual artist, make sure to create a profile in our directory so you can be part of our marketing campaign. If you already have a profile in the directory, share your events by logging into your dashboard and submit your events today! By submitting your events to gotocnyarts.org, you extend your reach through our advertising. We encourage you to post events as early as possible and promote the calendar to your audiences.

Onondaga County Economic Development Awards
CNY Arts is pleased to announce the results of the 2014 Onondaga County Economic Development grants program. In total, four arts and culture organizations will share $125,000 in funding from Room Occupancy Tax revenue designated for supporting arts projects with a measurable impact on the economic development of the county.
The Economic Development grant program was created at the request of the Onondaga County Legislature to help support projects that attract visitors from outside Onondaga County. According to audience surveys conducted by Le Moyne College as part of the Arts and Economic Prosperity IV report, out-of-county audience members spend $37.57 on average in outside spending: activity that benefits restaurants, retailers, hotels, and many more local businesses in addition to our arts and culture providers.
Awarded projects include:
- Museum of Science and Technology for Dinomania Exhibit at the MOST - $50,000
- Syracuse Stage for a one-week extension of Hairspray - $50,000
- Open Hand Theater for the International Arts and Puppet Festival - $17,500
- Light Work for the Summer Film under the Stars program - $7,500
The grant panel recommended that funds be used on the development and execution of marketing plans with a focus on attracting visitors from outside Onondaga County. Specific recommendations and marketing steps are being made to individual grantees as part of their responsibilities receiving funds.

Businesses Can Still Be a Part of On My Own Time 2014
There is still time for your business to register for On My Own Time, a business/arts collaborative presented by CNY Arts in cooperation with the Everson Museum of Art. This unique program, a recipient of two national awards, provides a platform for participating businesses to identify, celebrate, and promote artistic creativity among their employees.
Each participating company holds an exhibit at its business site consisting of works created by employees who are artists "on their own time". Our local volunteer panel of arts professionals will select several pieces from each company's exhibit to become part of the month-long On My Own Time exhibit at the Everson Museum of Art this fall.
Participating companies at all sponsorship levels will receive a full page in the On My Own Time catalog, which is distributed to the public during the run of the Everson Museum of Art exhibit, and are also included in press releases and newsletters, and on the CNY Arts website, social media outlets, and signage at the Everson.
As of March 20, the following organizations have signed on to sponsor and participate: Boxcar Press, Community Folk Art Center, County of Onondaga, Crouse Hospital, Entergy, Liverpool Art Center, Lockheed Martin, Northland Communications, Onondaga Community College, L. & J.G. Stickley, O'Brien & Gere, SUNY Oswego, Syracuse City School District, Syracuse University, Upstate Medical University, and United Radio.

ENGAGE CNY Regional Cultural Plan Released May 2
Following over a year of planning, community outreach, research, and analysis, CNY Arts is prepared to release the ENGAGE CNY Regional Cultural Plan at a press event on May 2. The plan will be released on our website following the press event at cnyarts.org/engagecny.
As reported here last month, a 62-member Leadership Advisory Council and 10 Arts Captains helped gather survey responses from 7200 residents, 500 artists, and 120 arts, culture, history, and heritage organizations. CNY Arts analyzed over 70 municipal planning, strategy, and budget documents, and held over 50 focus groups in Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties. The ENGAGE team integrated these findings into suggested strategies which the 129-person ENGAGE Summit prioritized based on regional needs.
The plan will contain workable strategies to support the artistic and cultural community, connect artists and audiences, and improve quality of life in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley.
