Over One Hundred Gather for the ENGAGE CNY Summit

CenterState CEO President Rob Simpson

On Wednesday, February 26, CNY Arts welcomed over 100 political, business, and community leaders to the Syracuse Hancock Regional Airport to help identify strategies intended to further develop the arts and culture sector in Central New York.

ENGAGE CNY is a regional assessment and planning process with an end goal of formulating a regional cultural plan. The project, which launched in June at the Rome Capitol Theatre, has since gone on to collect over 7200 survey responses from the public, over 500 responses from artists, and 120 arts, culture, history and heritage organizations in addition to holding over 50 focus groups

Onondaga County Deputy County Executive Bill Fisher

CNY Arts Executive Director Stephen Butler, Matt Dwyer (Northland Communications, CNY Arts Board Vice President, ENGAGE CNY Co-Chair), and Pamela Matt (Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce, ENGAGE CNY Co-Chair) all gave an overview of the assessment process and a preliminary look at the data obtained.

Onondaga County Deputy County Executive Bill Fisher and CenterState CEO President and CEO Robert Simpson talked about the importance of arts and culture in creating livable communities, and their status as an employer and economic sector. And Diane Mataraza, ENGAGE CNY's Project Consultant, gave an overview of potential strategies she and her team have suggested based on focus groups and survey data.

Participants in the summit broke out into county-by-county groups to discuss local priorities and select which strategies and tactics could best be employed to meet them. The feedback from the participants will be integrated into a cultural plan to be released in the spring.

ENGAGE CNY Co-Chairs Heather Buchman and George Kilpatrick concluded the afternoon by presenting the county-by-county results and the findings of a Higher Education summit held the previous weekend.

"After eight months of hard work, taking place across over 5500 square miles of Central New York; involving the extraordinary efforts of dozens of leadership advisers, volunteers, and partnering agencies; and after listening to 1000s of voices in our various surveys, this Summit marks a culmination of those efforts. This puts us one step closer towards the creation of our Regional Cultural Plan," said Stephen Butler.

Businesses Can Still Be a Part of On My Own Time 2014

On My Own Time Logo We are preparing to launch our 41st annual On My Own Time, a business/arts collaborative presented by CNY Arts in cooperation with the Everson Museum of Art. This unique program, a recipient of two national awards, provides a platform for participating businesses to identify, celebrate, and promote artistic creativity among their employees.

Each participating company holds an exhibit at its business site consisting of works created by employees who are artists "on their own time". Our local volunteer panel of arts professionals will select several pieces from each company's exhibit to become part of the month-long On My Own Time exhibit at the Everson Museum of Art this fall.

Participating companies at all sponsorship levels will receive a full page in the On My Own Time catalog, which is distributed to the public during the run of the Everson Museum of Art exhibi, and are also included in press releases and newsletters, as on the CNY Arts website, social media outlets, and signage at the Everson exhibit.

Interested companies are invited to attend our orientation and kick-off luncheon at Coleman's Restaurant in Syracuse on Thursday, March 13, at 12:30 pm,  even if they have not yet made a decision to participate. To reserve a place at the luncheon, please call 315.435.2162 by Friday, March 7 or send an e-mail  to: omot@cnyarts.org.
