Arthur Storch, founder of Syracuse Stage and its producing artistic director from 1974 to 1992, died Tuesday at the age of 87. His death, but not the cause, was confirmed by Syracuse Stage.
During his 18-year tenure, Storch elevated the Syracuse theater scene, bringing national attention and star power to the regional theater he established. He brought actors Jean Stapleton, Dina Merrill, John Cullum, Anne Jackson and her husband, Eli Wallach, to Stage. Syracuse Stage sent "Twice Around the Park" to Broadway and "Of Mice and Men" and "Cyrano de Bergerac" on nationwide tours.

Community Engagement Conversation at Le Moyne College
On Monday, March 18th at 7:00 p.m., Syracuse University's Janklow Arts Leadership Program and Le Moyne College's Arts Administration Program will host a Community Engagement conversation with Zenetta Drew, Executive Director of Dallas Black Dance Theatre.
Held at Le Moyne College's Panasci Family Chapel, the conversation will focus on Drew's efforts to engage the broader Dallas community throughout her career. Having worked at DBDT since 1987, Drew has ushered in an era of unprecedented growth, expanding the company's performances from 30 to over 300 and increasing the annual budget from $175,000 to $2,300,000.
An active member of the Dallas community, Ms. Drew currently serves on the Board of Downtown Dallas, the Advisory Board of the Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts, the Executive Advisory Board of the College of Business and Technology at Texas A & M University - Commerce and as Treasurer for the Dallas Development Fund.
The event is free and open to the public, and the evening will include an opportunity for audience members to engage in a Q&A with Ms. Drew. |
On My Own Time Registration Ends March 29
CNY Arts is preparing to launch the 40th anniversary edition of On My Own Time, an annual program that spotlights the talents of amateur artists in our local work force. Last year, 204 area employees from 18 companies submitted 456 works of visual art to On My Own Time. We invite all our 'alumni' businesses, as well as those brand new to the program, to join us this year for a very special event celebrating four decades of a unique, vibrant, business and arts collaboration.
In-house exhibits of original employee art will be held at each participating business this coming April and May. Works on display represent a wide and varied range of visual arts mediums, such as paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, woodwork, textiles, and jewelry. Each exhibit will be adjudicated by a panel of local professional artists. As a program finale this coming fall, the Everson Museum of Art will host an opening reception and month-long public exhibit featuring pieces selected from each company's On My Own Time entries.
For more information, visit the On My Own Time page on www.cnyarts.org, call Kara Greene, OMOT Program Coordinator, at 315-435-2162, or e-mail OMOT@cnyarts.org. The registration deadline for On My Own Time 2013 is March 29.

Volunteer Coalition Advocates on Arts Day
 |
Janet Langsam, Senator Betty Little, Steve Butler, Kay Stamer
|
CNY Arts Executive Director Stephen Butler joined with a coalition of arts advocacy volunteers from Arts NYS in Albany to speak with State legislators regarding arts funding.
The coalition is advocating for a $4 million LIFT to bring the NYSCA budget to $39.6 million, with the increase being targeted specifically to support arts grants.
Since the fiscal crisis of 2007-2008, NYSCA's arts grants have dipped from a high of $49 million to a low of $31.6 million representing a 35.5% reduction over a five year period and reducing per capita arts spending in the state to levels not seen since 1985.

Steve Butler Addresses Humphrey Fellows
CNY Arts Executive Director Stephen Butler was an invited lecturer for the annual Humphrey Fellowship Enhancement Workshop in February hosted by the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. The Enhancement Workshop entitled "Leadership Training in Times of Crisis" was a series of workshops to give Fellows perspectives and tools to more effectively address a wide range of crises. Steve spoke about crisis management and shared his own experiences of leading an organization out of crisis for the 192 students from 18 campuses and 93 countries that attended the workshop.
The Humphrey Fellowship program is a Fullbright exchange activity funded through the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to provide opportunities for cross-cultural learning and a fuller sense of global context. "This is an impressive program that highlights Central New York to key emerging international leaders that are participating as fellows. We were happy that the agency was recognized and to be a part of such an important program," said Butler.
