CNY Arts Receives $150K Regional Economic Development Grant from NY State, $100K from Cultural Resources Trust
Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council (REDC), and the New York State Council on the Arts have awarded $150,000 to CNY Arts in support of the IDEAS Collaborative. The Initiative to Develop and Engage Audiences and Services (IDEAS) is a partnership between arts organizations, local funders, the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau, and CNY Arts to strengthen the bonds between culture and community in Central New York. IDEAS was begun in 2010 by Gifford Foundation, Central New York Community Foundation, Allyn Foundation, Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation, John Ben Snow Foundation, and the Trust for Cultural Resources of Onondaga County, with support from the County of Onondaga. To date, 43 arts, culture, and heritage organizations are participants in the Initiative.
The funds will be used to execute the next phase of the IDEAS Collaborative with CNY Arts as the lead agency in a regional development approach to creating long term, sustainable cultural arts programming that contributes significantly to the economic vitality and positive quality of life for Central New York, including Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties.
CNY Arts has also received a $100,000 grant from the Trust for Cultural Resources of Onondaga County for marketing and advertising costs related to the promotion of Onondaga County arts, cultural, and heritage institutions, large and small. |
Arts Advocacy - Action Required!
In January, Governor Cuomo unveiled his proposed budget for 2014. Arts groups and arts advocates from across the state were happy to learn that the Governor did not propose any new cuts to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), for the second year in a row. Still, NYSCA is currently a smaller agency than it was in 1994, funded at $35.6 million compared to its peak funding year in 1994 at $54 million. Factoring in the inflation over the past two decades, it is clear the agency cannot deliver the same levels of support to arts and culture groups across the state.
So while arts advocates are incredibly grateful for the Governor's support, visits are getting underway to local legislators to make the case for a modest increase of $4M (just under 10%). It would be enormously helpful if every arts group and supporter could contact their Assembly member and State Senator to support that effort. Visits are the most effective means of demonstrating support. Emails are not effective.
Arts advocates are requesting a $4 million increase designated for Local Assistance.
These funds to be used only to A) increase the total funding in Local Assistance grants above the average level of this funding by the agency over the past three years and B) to provide the grants making peer panels with an opportunity to address long standing inequities in funding levels that resulted during the time of significant budget cuts at NYSCA.
IMPORTANT: The timeline for doing this is shorter than usual due to Passover/Good Friday dates on the calendar. The schedule published today shows that the Senate and Assembly will have Joint Conference Committee meetings starting on March 11. It is important to visit or contact legislators by very early March at the latest. TIMING OF LOCAL MEETINGS: The legislature is not normally in session the third week in February, which means they are in their district. February 18 is a legal holiday, but the rest of that week should be a good time to visit home offices.
MESSAGE: This modest $4M request is so important for the state because of what the arts can do. Americans for the Arts just released its study Arts and Economic Prosperity IV, so there is significant data about how arts and culture activities are economic drivers. But the Arts do so much more: community engagement with senior citizens, reaching the disenfranchised, crucial arts education activities for school children, and quality of life experiences for the residents in all of our communities. Be sure to share why the arts are important in your community.

Michael Harms Theater Festival this April!
The 2013 Michael Harms Theater Festival is fast approaching; the curtain rises on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Cayuga Community College. The Festival seeks to foster greater interest in theater work by students and teachers in secondary schools. It has gained wide recognition as a theater experience of high educational value and fun, and provides a rare opportunity for students and teachers to display their outstanding acting and technical achievement in front of their peers and professional theater practitioners
The 2012 Festival was attended by more than 200 students and 50 adults from five schools and three community theater groups: Auburn High School, Jamesville-DeWitt High School, La Joven Guardia del Teatro Latino, Manlius Pebble Hill School, The Media Unit, Oswego Children's Theater, Sherburne-Earlville High School Drama Club, and Skaneateles High School Drama.

CNY Businesses Invited to Join 40th Annual On My Own Time
CNY Arts is preparing to launch the 40th anniversary edition of On My Own Time, an annual program that spotlights the talents of amateur artists in our local work force. Last year, 204 area employees from 18 companies submitted 456 works of visual art to On My Own Time. We invite all our 'alumni' businesses, as well as those brand new to the program, to join us this year for a very special event celebrating four decades of a unique, vibrant, business and arts collaboration.
A kick-off luncheon will be held on Thursday, March 14 at Coleman's Restaurant in Syracuse (pre-registration is required). In-house exhibits of original employee art will be held at each participating business this coming April and May. Works on display represent a wide and varied range of visual arts mediums, such as paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, woodwork, textiles, and jewelry. Each exhibit will be adjudicated by a panel of local professional artists. As a program finale this coming fall, the Everson Museum of Art will host an opening reception and month-long public exhibit featuring pieces selected from each company's On My Own Time entries.
For more information, visit the On My Own Time page on www.cnyarts.org, call Kara Greene, OMOT Program Coordinator, at 315-435-2162, or e-mail OMOT@cnyarts.org. The registration deadline for On My Own Time 2013 is March 29.
