MEMBER OF THE MONTH - Adriane Weigand

Adriane began her membership at Steel Fitness Premier in 2008 as a summer student. Since graduating from college and  becoming a Registered Nurse for LVHN in 2011, she converted to a full-time membership. Adriane's primary reason for joining SFP is to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. She also trains for half marathons and the Tough Mudder race. Adriane attends SFP 6 days a week for 60 minute sessions. Her workouts include running, strength training, pilates and yoga classes. Adriane says that she sees many benefits from working out such as positive energy, achievement of her personal goals and the motivation to set new ones.

Keep setting and achieving those goals, Adriane! Hard work always pays off!

PT CLIENTS OF THE MONTH - The Mary G & Mary W

PT Clients of the month are Mary Goodman (MG) and Mary Weiss (MW).  They train twice a week for an hour with Chris Leavy.

1.)    How long have you been a personal training client?

MG:  5 years

MW: Since June 2012

2.)    Why did you decide to hire a personal trainer?

MG:  I had fitness goals, but little understanding of how to reach them.

MW:  To stay motivated about working out, to become stronger, to improve my endurance and to train with a friend

3.)    What were your initial goals? Why did you start a personal training program?

MG:  To lose some pounds and get stronger.

MW:  To get stronger and to lose "stubborn" weight.  I have always used a personal trainer, and started with Chris immediately after I joined Steel Fitness Premier

4.)    What is your biggest fitness accomplishment?

MG:  Significantly increased strength and stamina and lost some weight.

MW:  Gaining increased energy and confidence

5.)    What advice would you give to someone considering personal training?

MG:  Find a good trainer - certified - and give it a try.

MW:  Don't hesitate - do it!  Find a personal trainer that compliments your needs and go for it.

6.)    What is your favorite thing about your trainer?

MG:  He changes the routine constantly-the variety helps keep the workout interesting.  Emphasis is on functional training.

MW:  Chris doesn't let me "cheat" and constantly challenges me to do better. He has a great sense of humor!

7.)    What is your next fitness goal?

MG:  Challenge myself with new group fitness classes, maybe a 5k run.

MW:  To incorporate more cardio into my exercise program and challenge myself to do different types of cardio

8.)    In a sentence or two, tell us about your overall experience as a training client.

MG:  I enjoy the experience and the results.

MW:  The experience has been terrific.  I get to train with a great friend and feel that Chris is knowledgeable and personable.

The "Marys" are great to work with.  They always welcome a challenge and are not afraid to lift heavy weights to get strong.  We chose them as PT clients of the month because they are a great example of the benefits of training with a friend - it is fun, encouraging and supportive.  Training with a friend is also more cost effective (both clients pay for 30 minutes, but they get a full hour long personal training session.)

TAI CHI HELPS WITH BALANCE AND FALL PREVENTION

The first research done in the United States about the benefits of tai chi was at Emory University. Being investigated was the issue of balance and fall prevention. The results were astounding, and have been replicated many times over.

Eric Borreson, a tai chi teacher, writes.

Proprioception is an inner sense that works with the central nervous system. It is the ability of your brain to communicate and coordinate the movement of different parts of your body. Good exercises to improve proprioception are those that challenge your balance and equilibrium, like tai chi.

Kinesthetic sense is an outer sense that works with your body in space and time. It is your mind knowing where each part of your body is in relation
to things around you. Good exercises to improve kinesthetic awareness are
those that require coordination and movement control.

Combining proprioception and a kinesthetic sense improves your ability to
control your body's movements. Improving your proprioception and
kinesthetic awareness can turn you from an eternal klutz into a skilled
athlete. It helps you make more precise movements with less effort. In
other words, it improves your balance and coordination. Tai Chi is very
precise and controlled. This brings the player's focus to the movement and
that focus transfers to everyday life.

If you would like to improve your balance, consider joining the tai chi
program at Steel Fitness Premier. Day and evening classes, open to members and
non-members, are available
