Music...It's deep in our roots.

We live it,
breathe it and make it kick!

In 1973, KICKER's Livin' Loud legacy began as a two-man operation, hand-building professional-speaker systems in a narrow one-car garage. With very few resources and an intense love for music, company founder and current President Steve Irby invented the mobile-stereo enclosure market in his northern Oklahoma community, when he developed the Original KICKER.

built by Rob Ida Customs. Photos by Kurt Ernst

Rob Ida's build of a 1940 Mercury coupe for owner Jack Kiely has been in the works since at least 2008. As with any project this ambitious, delays are inevitable, but in this case, worth the wait.

After debuting the Lincoln Zephyr inspired custom three-window coupe at SEMA, Rob and his team have picked up a Best of Show design award from Ford Motor Company.

COKER TIRES

Since 1958, Coker Tire Company has supplied collector vehicle enthusiasts with tires and wheels for many applications.

With such brands as Firestone, Michelin, U.S. Royal and BFGoodrich, the product line at Coker Tire is filled with high quality bias ply and radial tires. Coker Tire ships worldwide and attends more than 40 events a year.

Twelve Awesome Cars with Whitewall Tires

There is no doubt that there are styling cues that stand out in every collector car enthusiasts mind. Whether it's the miles of gleaming stainless steel or chrome plated trim, or the beautiful color combinations, one common thread that ties many cars from the '20s through the '60s is the tires.

And not just any tires - whitewall tires to be exact. The idea of a whitewall tire came about in the '20s, and it was common on all types of cars, even muscle cars, through the '70s. The whitewalls grew and shrank in size over the years, but a good-looking set of period correct whitewall tires can make a huge difference in the appearance of a classic car, hot rod or customized vehicle.

The car's listed here feature true whitewall tires - not a port-o-wall or a modern tire that has been modified to feature a whitewall. These tires are the real deal, and they make these classic grab your attention just like they did when they rolled off the showroom floor. Whether you choose bias ply or radial construction, many brands and styles of whitewall tires are available from Coker Tire. Take a look at 12 awesome cars from the late '20s through the early '60s and see why everyone loves an old car with whitewall tires.

Hot Rod Network

When Darold and Lynnette Kohout opened Sacramento Vintage Ford in 1969 it was housed in a tiny, windowless, corrugated metal building. From that humble beginning their business has grown and today they occupy an impressive 70,000-square-foot facility packed with restoration and hot rod parts and enough memorabilia to start a museum.

In the huge showroom a number of famous rods and customs are always on display and you can grab a hot dog and shake in the '50s-style diner, appropriately dubbed the Chrome Grille.

Along with being one of the foremost parts suppliers in the hobby, Sacramento Vintage Ford also hosts a variety of activities that benefit the community. One such event is Vintage Fridays that supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Held four times this year, Vintage Fridays is open to pre-1973 U.S. makes and models, although you don't have to have a car to join in. Festivities kick off at 4 p.m., the barbecues are fired up by 4:30 and it's all over at 9 p.m. (Check the VintageFridays.com website for more information.)

If you're looking for parts and want to check out a really cool store, make sure to visit Sacramento Vintage.

Discovery Channel seeking star
of "Garage Rehab"

Courtesy Kurt Ernst - Hemmings Daily
The (presumably abandoned) Litchfield Garage in
Rio, Illinois. Photo by Pete Zarria.

Have you ever run a successful auto repair business? Are you good with people? Do you think you have what it takes to be a star on the small screen? Want to add Fast and Loud's Richard Rawlings to your speed dial list? If you answered yes to the above, the Discovery Channel wants to hear from you, as it's currently casting for the star of a new reality series, Garage Rehab.

Those who've watched televisions shows like Kitchen Nightmares or Hotel Impossible know the format: A down-on-its-luck business reaches out to an expert in the field for help, said expert brings along a camera crew, and after much weeping, wailing and the occasional thrown dish, a small business is transformed. Substitute thrown wrench for thrown dish, change restaurant or hotel to auto repair facility, and you have the premise of Garage Rehab.

PANORAMIC FORD

NEW PANORAMIC FORD - Courtesy Rik Hoving

Andreas Åberg from Sweden has re-create the Panoramic Ford and in the progress improved on its original design. Lets take a closer look at the New Panoramic Ford in the last article in this series, the Panoramic Ford Part fter having worked on several car project since he was in his young teens, Andreas from Sweden has developed a passion for classic customs in the early 200o's. One car in particular sparks his interest. The Barris/Cerny created Panoramic Ford created for Buster Litton.

When you view part One and Two on this car, you can understand why. The Buster Litton Panoramic Ford is - for many Custom Car enthusiast - one of the most beautiful Customs ever created. In 2005 Andreas is able to buy an unassembled, but complete 1950 Ford Sedan at a car auction not to far from where he lives. He is able to buy the car for a very low price, which is perfect since the plan to recreate the Panoramic Ford means he will have to find and buy a lot of rare car parts from the US and have them shipped to his home in Sweden, not cheap.

First thing to do for Andreas is to put together the Ford parts he had bought at the auction and makes it a rolling project. While at it Andreas mildly customized the car using 1952 Ford headlights and nosed and decked the car before painting it with black primer. In the winter of 2007-2008 Anreas starts its major project of recreating the Panoramic Ford. After doing research on the Buster Litton Ford collecting every photo and info he could find he made a list of parts he would need and noticed a few things on the original car he thought could be improved upon. So he decided to not create a perfect replica of the original Panoramic Ford, but rather a refined version of it. The New Panoramic Ford.

FAQs For Classic Vehicle And Street Rod Owners

1: How often should I change my oil?

Quite simply - it depends. This certainly isn't the ideal answer, but it is the most honest one. Temperature plays a major role in the frequency of necessary oil change intervals. Every 20°F increase in oil temperature beyond 220°F shortens the life of the oil by 50%. This means cars that run very high oil temps will have much shorter oil life than cars that have moderate oil temperatures. Read On....

Designed Specifically For Hot Rods & Classic Vehicles

Well suited for a variety of hot rods, muscle cars and vintage vehicles. This oil is an excellent choice for big block muscle cars, blown street rods and engines with original seals. Features storage protection additives that guard against rust and corrosion during winter storage.

Good for flat tappet, overhead and roller cam engines. No ZDDP or additives required. Viscosity typical of 15W-50. Formerly referred to as HR1.

The Importance of ZDDP
ZDDP is the critical anti-wear additive in motor oils.

Here Lake Speed, Jr., Certified Lubrication Specialist at Driven Racing Oil™, explains how the proper balance of detergents and zinc are the key to protecting engines.

South End Kustom was started by Dick Dean, the year was 1956 in Wyandotte, Michigan. Working for other shops, such as Clark/ Kaiser and the Alexander Brothers. South End Kustom stayed busy.

In 1959, at the Detroit Autorama, Dick met George Barris. George had told Dick that he needed to be in California. At the end of that year Dick closed the shop and moved to California to work for Barris. In 2005, Dick Dean was set to retire. His son, Keith Dean wanted to continue the "Dean" tradition . As a tribute to Dick, Keith reopened the shop as South End Kustom and is continuing the old school kustom tradition set forth by his father.

Boyd Coddington's final creation

Boyd Coddington may well have been the man who brought hot-rodding into the living rooms of Middle America, via his successful TLC television series American Hot Rod. Before his untimely 2008 death, Coddington was growing ever more determined to take the hobby in a new, coachbuilt direction, and next January his final creation, a 1938 Lincoln known as The French Connection, heads to auction in Scottsdale.

Though it's listed by Barrett-Jackson as a 1938 Lincoln, The French Connection is really a custom build from the ground up, starting with a chassis from Art Morrison. The body was handcrafted of steel and aluminum by Marcel and Sons, while the interior required two complete cow hides and 15 ostrich skins to dress out. The wheels, hidden behind fully skirted fenders, are a one-off creation by Boyd Coddington, and even the colors should be familiar to those acquainted with Coddington's work, as the red is "Boyd Red" and the black is "Boyd Black."

Whether you own and/or are interested in the hobby and history of restoring or personalizing a classic, custom, hot rod or muscle car, we've got you covered.  We talk about kool cars, events, trends and California vehicle laws that affect our hobby.

Hosted by Alex Blanca and Bob Stearns, CRUISIN' GARAGE is the voice for the classic car owner, the race car fan or anyone interested in the history and hobby of restoring or personalizing a classic, custom, hot rod or muscle car.

The ninety minute show is packed with guests who come from all areas of the classic car industry.  From the local swap meet car parts seller, garage builder to show car owner and parts manufactures, we welcome them all.  We're talking about local barn finds, car shows, swap meets, industry trends and the California vehicle laws that affect our hobby.

Our goal is to inform and share experiences of our guests and help maintain a continued interest for the next generation of car collectors.  We do this by promoting local car clubs, car shows, the sponsors and the charities that benefit.  If you have a car or car parts for sale, preferably pre-1973, give us a call during the show, or tell us what you're looking to buy.

The ballots have been counted and the illustrious members of the Grand National Hall of Fame have voted four new members into their fraternity.

This year, four very diverse motorsports aficionados have been chosen from a long list of nominees and will be inducted into the prestigious group on Saturday, January 30th at the Sheraton Suites Fairplex Conference Center during the Grand National Roadster Show.

Luc DeLey from Corona, CA works with his dad and brother at Marcel's Custom Metal, creating handmade bodies for the industry's most recognized builders. From the original Boydster for the late Boyd Coddington, many projects for Chip Foose and most recently the Jaguar coupe for Rick Dore, Luc and his family produce the finest works of rolling art in the country.

Mickey Himsl from Concord, CA has been responsible for some of the most recognizable cars in the country. With brother Art, in the 60's, they opened Custom Paint Studio in Concord. Mickey's "Paddy Wagon" was a show winner and in the late 60's with the help of Art, they built "The Alien" collecting the 1969 America Most Beautiful Roadster trophy. They followed that up with the wild roadster for Andy Brizio and another AMBR award.

Steve Stanford from Los Angles is a prolific automotive artist and custom car designer. His art is commissioned by builders and enthusiasts alike and has inspired countless people throughout Hot Rodding. Chip Foose, who has studied Steve's art said his two dimensional art is the best, his art comes from his heart. Steve has been honored by the Petersen Museum in 2014 and the Late George Barris stated "He is the best, he can feel cars".

Oz Welch from Oroville, CA is a custom car builder and painter whose shop is off the beaten path in a small town in Northern California. He has built and painted many award winning customs for the likes of John D'Agostino, and Richard Zocchi. His own 1960 Cadillac won a Big B award at the Sacramento Autorama. His latest creation for John D'Agostino is a full custom 1958 Packard that will makes its debut at the Sacramento Autorama.

The Hall of Fame luncheon and induction ceremony takes place during the Grand National Roadster Show, January 29-31, at the Pomona Fairplex.

Sacramento Autorama new
LEGENDS inductees for 2016!

John Buck  -  Joe Cusumano  -  "Wild" Bill Hill

John Buck was born in Pomona CA on June 27, 1969. He was raised in Claremont where he went to High School and met his lifelong friends. John graduated from the University of Southern California where he was a Business Major with a Minor in Marketing.

John started his career in the hospitality industry working for hotels and eventually the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau. While at the LACVB John was responsible for booking the newly developed Staples Center as well as Convention Center and the 400 hotels in the Greater Los Angeles Area. John's boss at the LACVB moved over to Starwood hotels , and brought him along to the Sheraton Suites Fairplex as the Director of Sales. John worked at the hotel until the Fairplex recruited him to work directly as their Director of Sales.   He was responsible for booking all aspects of revenue streams into the facility including the year round events such as the Grand National Roadster Show.

John purchased the Sacramento Autorama along with the Grand National Roadster show while working for the Fairplex. He saw great potential in the events and has grown them to include the Drive-Ins and the Suede Pavilion/Palace. "Sacramento is the Kustom Capitol of the World" "I love the creations that the custom guys continually come up with" says Buck.

John is blessed to work with his sister Laura and good friends Michi, Greg and Tom.   He has two beautiful children; Daniel and Sara.

"The Sacramento Autorama is an honor to own and produce" says John. "Having fun with the greatest car people in the world sure does make it easier to do!" "Thank you for this special induction as a Friend of the Autorama."

Joe Cusumano has had a long history of customizing cars and restoring classics. Many were built between overseas duty assignments serving on 14 ships with the US Navy during his 34 year active duty military career from 1959-1992. With his engineering and electrical background, his work is well respected.
Initially, he customized early 1949-54 Fords, 55-56 Chevys, and 1970's muscle cars to reflect his ideas for enhanced power under the hood and softer body designs. One of his favorite builds was restoring an original 1940 Ford deluxe coupe from parts that came in old peach baskets. Another favorite was a 1956 Corvette that he wishes he still had.

In 1992, Joe retired from the US Navy in the Bay area, and opened his GM Joe's Specialty Automotive business. Although many of the cars were built for customers to be the "weekend or daily driver", Joe restored a 1971 boat-tail Buick Riviera that was shown on the ISCA circuit and won Best Restored in the Pacific Division. It also won the prestigious 1994 Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance, and other special awards. This National recognition brought more business to Joe.

Joe modified and updated a 1957 Chevy radical custom for a futuristic look that was judged through ISCA shows and won 1997 First Place Overall in the Nation. It won various special awards, including the George Barris d'Elegance, Portland's first 'King of Kustom', and many other awards. Show promoters from Sweden, Finland and Australia had the car at their major in-door shows. Joe's involvement overseas has encouraged a stronger international car enthusiast connection for the continuation of the sport and industry.

Wild Bill Hill built his first tattoo machine at age 14 and began tattooing on himself and his friends in a tiny tattoo shop set up in his bedroom closet. He never saw a tattoo studio until 1972 at age 17, when he walked into one- and knew at that moment that's what he wanted to do with his life. He still owes the 1959 Black Ford Panel Truck with flames from the grill to the tail lights he had in 72.

With a love of motorcycles that was passed down from his father, (also named Bill) the younger Bill rode around on his Harley, raising hell. Noted for partying a bit too much and for his scrapes with the law- he acquired the nickname 'Wild Bill'. Bill made a decision to stop drinking at age 20. He quickly noticed that things started to go much better for him after that. He still has not had alcohol to this day, enjoying a clean and sober life.

Brian Everett and Jack Rudy, two of Bill's tattoo mentors, got him started collecting and going to custom car shows, which became an obsession with him. Always customizing and creating never wanting something anyone else in town had.

Roxanne and Bill have entered Cars and motorcycles in The last 20 Sacramento Autoramas, sometimes bringing 4 to 6 vehicles.. Today their garage is full of custom show cars and bikes including a shortened 1966 Drag Racing VW Van, 1932 Ford Phaeton, 1915 Brass and Wood Model-T Speedster, 1959 Messerschmitt, a 1989 Car Hauler that's half a front wheeled truck welded to a Car Trailer, 2002 Panoz AIV Roadster, that Bill took driving lessons from Adam Andretti in at the track.

And you thought "Wild Bill Hill" was just about Tattos!

Roy Brizio Street Rods has for more than twenty years earned a well deserved reputation for providing the parts and pieces as well as complete turnkey cars that have defined modern hot rodding. In fact, the Brizio name has been synonymous with quality hot rods for nearly half a century and has spanned two generations.

Our philosophy is simple: to build and help others build the finest looking and driving hot rods of our time. Our achievements point to the successful implementation of this thinking. We have built Oakland Roadster Show winners and Hot Rod Magazine's 50th Anniversary celebration "T" roadster, but perhaps our greatest pride comes from building dual purpose show winning drivers. No other shop the world can boast of putting more miles on their cars than Roy Brizio Street Rods.

We anxiously await the opportunity to assist you with your next project, whether it be just a few parts, a complete Brizio chassis or a turnkey cross country cruiser.

European and Asian cars have their devotees, Australian cars seem to be in the news a lot lately, and Yank Tanks are well known worldwide, but seemingly forgotten are the native vehicles of Canada, South America and Central America. Often, these were derivatives of U.S. designs but with local changes influenced by marketing, tariffs and sales infrastructure.

Now, your intrepid reporter doesn't speak Spanish or Portuguese, so his burning desire to investigate the Ford Falcons of Argentina and the Willys Aero's second life in Brazil will have to wait for another day, but Canadian brochures are readily accessible and usually in English, so it's a relatively simple matter to dig into the special vehicles produced for the Great White North.

Setting aside the independents leaves the Big Three. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all had manufacturing plants in Canada as early as the 1910s. The big reason at that time was that it gave them tariff-free access to the whole of the British Empire by virtue of being Canadian-, rather than U.S.-built vehicles.
