The initiative implemented by NHRA Field Marketing will inspire current racers, fans, and supporters of the NHRA to bring friends to share the speed at NHRA Member Tracks events.

The Passing of One of Hot Rod Magazine's and Industry's Pioneers

LeRoi "Tex" Smith, one of the automotive industry's true iconic figures. Tex left all of us in his rearview mirror on the evening of June 11, 2015, while at his home in Australia, succumbing to a lingering illness.  

He had spent his last years living with his current family in Australia where he had cultivated an entirely new grouping of hot rod friends while others within his family remained stateside. There will be more coming on the life and times of LeRoi "Tex" Smith but for now let me give you a glimmer of insight into a man who was at the core of the hot rod movement, as well as at the very foundation of the automotive publishing industry.

Tex is a nickname he picked up as a teenager living in Oklahoma-Oklahoma, not Texas! He once brought home a Levi-style jacket that already had the name "Tex" riveted onto it. Hence, the nickname and if you knew Tex this was such a typical story coming from a very proud man who professed his love for his Native American (Cherokee) heritage and culture.  

He also served proudly in the U.S. Air Force during the early '50s as a fighter pilot. It was during this service that he came to know another legend-Wally Parks of both Hot Rod magazine fame (as its editor) and later worldwide recognition as the founder/leader of the National Hot Rod Association. Tex had a true love of all things automotive, coming from a family well versed in the body and paint business, and as a lifelong tinkerer of hot rods. He played semi-pro baseball, something else that he maintained his love for throughout his life.  

While in the service he had developed a friendship with Parks and when Tex finished his military service Parks offered him a job at the National Hot Rod Association and later Hot Rod in 1957. It was a friendship that lasted a lifetime and yielded an incredible body of work. Another one of those lifetime friendships cultivated from behind the keyboard and camera was another Hot Rod staffer, Tom Medley of "Stroker McGurk" fame. The two of them would prove inseparable for the remainder of Medley's life (who died in 2014). The two may have spent more time fishing and telling each other stories than working on magazine projects but theirs was truly a friendship without parallel.
