PHOENIX, AZ. (KSAZ)

A bit of aviation history flew into Deer Valley Monday morning and her name is Fifi -- a B-29 Superfortress bomber.

"The bombardier in the front had the best seat available," said Colonel Mark Novak, a Commemorative Air Force pilot.

And it's a seat you could have if you want to book a ride on Fifi.

Flying into the valley between rain showers, Novak says she's truly one of a kind -- because Fifi is the only B-29 still flying.

"She's special.  We take great care of her.  It's a great thing that I get to fly the airplane," he said.

Fifi has been part of the Commemorative Air Force since she was found in the 1970s at the US Navy Proving Ground at China Lake in California.  Before that, she served as a trainer for US Air Corps pilots who flew B-29s over Japan in World War II and later over Korea.

Now the Commemorative Air Force flies her around the country to give people and experience they could never get in a museum.

"We don't want to be a static museum, we don't want to be in one hangar and people come to us.. we can have a hundred times more people see us during the year when we bring the airplane out," said Novak.

THE 1940 FORD CUTAWAY

What you see before you is something so incredibly rare that there doesn't seem to be anyone alive that can actually tell us why it was made or for whom. It's a 1940 Ford cutaway chassis and running gear that is owned and was restored by Rick Rennebohm of Whidbey Island, WA. Rick bought the enigmatic chassis on eBay in 2009 without knowing much about its history. He just thought it was cool... and had to have it.

Of course, as soon as he got the thing home and started restoring it he began to wonder just where in the hell it came from. The obvious place to start was Dick Pierson - the man he bought the chassis from. As it turns out, Dick bought the contraption from Iowa State University in 1994. A friend of a friend of his, Richard Grieve, was working with the school's industrial engineering department in a space that had been recently abandoned by the university's veterinarian school. Richard simply walked into the lab one day and the cut-away chassis was sitting innocently in a hall way.

Richard had owned a couple of 1940 Fords in the past and knew instantly what the chassis was and felt there had to be some importance to it. His first thought was that it belonged in a museum, so he called The Henry Ford Museum and pitched them on his new find. They claimed to already have one on premise and declined the opportunity.


A side note here... You would think the fact that The Henry Ford had a cut-away already would be a big break in this investigation. I mean, if they have one they, of all people, would know its history - right? Well, it's turns out that The Henry Ford Museum does not have a 1940 Ford cut-away in their inventory. In fact, what they have is an Oldsmobile.

Anyway, after striking out with the museum suits, Richard decided to see if any local early Ford guys had interest. A friend of a friend hooked him up with Dick Pierson and Dick was able to buy the car from the University. Once Dick had the car, he cleaned it up a bit and showed it around the midwest. In 2007, he tried to get it into the Peterson Museum, but was rejected. He sold it to Rick soon after.
So we know the car was at one time owned by Iowa State University, but how in the hell did they get it? And why?

The Association of California Car Clubs (ACCC) is a volunteer organization with regional representatives who represent the interests of individual members and member clubs across the state. The ACCC consists of thousands of automobile hobbyists throughout the state who are interested in California laws and policies regarding collector automobiles.

Hobby clubs and individuals joining the ACCC contribute to the protection of the hobby and are kept informed of the latest issues affecting our clubs.

These representatives form the Board of Directors, serve without pay and are elected from the pool of active auto enthusiasts in this state 

The 2015 Butch Gardner "Save Our Cars" Car Show will be at Sacramento Vintage Ford 2484 Mercantile Drive,

South End Kustom was started by Dick Dean, the year was 1956 in Wyandotte, Michigan. Working for other shops, such as Clark/ Kaiser and the Alexander Brothers. South End Kustom stayed busy.  

In 1959, at the Detroit Autorama, Dick met George Barris. George had told Dick that he needed to be in California. At the end of that year Dick closed the shop and moved to California to work for Barris. In 2005, Dick Dean was set to retire. His son, Keith Dean wanted to continue the "Dean" tradition . As a tribute to Dick, Keith reopened the shop as South End Kustom and is continuing the old school kustom tradition set forth by his father.
