1933 Ford Roadster built by Bobby Alloway
is 2015 America's Most Beautiful Roadster

Larry Olson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota asked Bobby Alloway to build his 1933 Ford Roadster, and the rest is now hot rod history. This stunning flamed '33 roadster has won the America's Most Beautiful Roadster trophy for 2015. The announcement was at the 2015 Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California.

Long and low and crouched across its show display like a flaming black panther,  the 1933 Ford Roadster looked like the car to beat today. Alloway has set many trends in street rod building and his roadsters are famous. This one was stretched an extra two inches for a look and stance that is perfect. The secret to the car is in the details. The lines are simple and smooth, enhanced by perfectly formed steel body panels and gaps. It has Alloway wheels which complement the stance.

The engine is a 241 ci Dodge Red Ram Hemi fed by six Stromberg 97s set up in an original old school style. What you can't see is the fuel injectors hidden in the cylinder heads. The car has a Tremec T-5 transmission, Winters Performance V8 Quick Change rearend, Posie suspension parts and Billet Specialties. An old school custom black interior was done by Steve Holcomb Pro Upholstry.

Olson brought the flamed black roadster to the 66th Annual Grand National Roadster Show to win the America's Most Beautiful Roadster trophy. And that is what he did.

Inspired there, replicated there:
Italian builds homage to Edsel Ford's
1934 speedster

Typically it's Americans who replicate Italian cars, what with all the Fauxrarris, Lampostorghinis, and Seventies kit cars built, not the other way around. One exception exists, however, and it rather makes sense, given that European coachcraft inspired it in the first place:

Edsel, whose sense of style far surpassed his father's and who in many ways ensured the success of Ford Motor Company, commissioned a number of specials and speedsters for his own use throughout the years. Perhaps one of the more famous of his specials (aside from the one that would go on to influence the production Lincoln Continental), the 1934 Model 40 speedster, began as a directive from Ford to E.T. "Bob" Gregorie to build him something "continental," by which he meant low, sleek, stylish, and racy. Gregorie started with a 1934 Ford chassis, but designed an entirely new aluminum two-seater body that positioned the driver far back in the chassis and that eliminated running boards, doors, and pretty much all unnecessary decoration. Originally built with a single vertical divided grille, the speedster later was fitted with its distinct lower horizontal grille to add cooling capacity.

The speedster remained in Ford's possession until his death in 1943, was sold for $200, then bounced from one end of the country to the other, popping up in Hollywood in the Forties and Fifties, then in Florida from the late 1950s on. Amelia Island Concours founder Bill Warner owned it for a time, before selling it at auction to collector John O'Quinn, whose estate later sold it to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate, which restored it in its current gray livery and debuted it at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It's currently part of the Dream Cars exhibit which will make its way to Indianapolis later this year.

The Association of California Car Clubs (ACCC) is a volunteer organization with regional representatives who represent the interests of individual members and member clubs across the state. The ACCC consists of thousands of automobile hobbyists throughout the state who are interested in California laws and policies regarding collector automobiles.

Hobby clubs and individuals joining the ACCC contribute to the protection of the hobby and are kept informed of the latest issues affecting our clubs.

These representatives form the Board of Directors, serve without pay and are elected from the pool of active auto enthusiasts in this state 

The 2015 Butch Gardner "Save Our Cars" Car Show will be at Sacramento Vintage Ford 2484 Mercantile Drive,
Rancho Cordova, CA. 95742.

Gates open at 8:00 AM on August 15, 2015 and the show goes from 10:00 AM - 2:30PM. Show goes on rain or shine!

 

The First Batmobile Sells For a
Disappointing $137k

The original Batmobile-or at least, the first real-life car that was licensed by DC Comics as a Batmobile-sold at auction for just $137,000 last December.  

That's a disappointing result considering the importance of the car in the pantheon of Bat-kitsch.  

And even though the George Barris TV creation that was created afterwards traded hands for $4.2M last year, this one brought a tiny fraction of that. Which isn't to sell the Forrest Robinson Batmobile short.

This video, which shows the car in motion, details its creation by avowed Batman fanboy and amateur car customizer Robinson. The interviews with its restorers and prior owners show why it's special- and why it was expected to bring in a lot more cash at auction.

 

Moreover, it's a proper early 1960s hot rod in many respects, packing a Olds Rocket V8 on a 1956 Olds 88 frame.

It was built by Robinson as a private venture, the only car he's known for, and was restored after being abandoned for decades-an expensive proposition. No word on whether the seller recouped their investment, but it's a surprising snub for a genuine, unique Batmobile.
