They can possess the critical skills and competencies required to move initiatives forward and see projects through to completion – which can ultimately give your organization an edge over your competition. [ Back to Top ] ...................................................................................................... Each issue we look at all sides of an issue of interest to project leaders. This month: Trends in PM point ... every which way. The Economist, in an article about using data from social media sites like LinkedIn to show employment trends, includes a graph showing a drop in the numbers of people who list “Project Manager” as their job title. But are there fewer PMs ... or do they have new business-oriented titles, like Project Executive or VP for Program Management – a common title among our PMO of the Year recipients. Meanwhile, Baseline features a study that says the average PMO lifespan is four years ... but our State of the PMO study tells us that, for top-performing companies, the average is 5 – 8 years, while some finalists in the PMO of the Year have had over 10 years to perfect their game. The moral of the story? Trends research that is not iterative, showing changes over time, can be misleading. And research studies often uncover anomalies and new questions, along with answers.
