Grids

Grids allow for easier input at the point of sale. If your store has a Rental department, you can also set up a Grid layout for your rental products. You can access your Grid by selecting the Grid button in Ring Sale or on the Rental Items screen of a Rental contract. The Grid has 12 boxes and these boxes can be used to display items within your inventory or lead to other grids. A Grid can be useful for touch screen workstations, specialized workstations (rental counter, paint counter, etc), and more. The following newsletter will detail how to set up a grid and even some options within Company Setup that can assist in making those specialized workstations more efficient.

Set Up

To set up the Grid, click on POS | File Maintenance and you will see two "Grid Layout" options. One is for POS and the other is for Rental. Both are set up in the same way, just used in different parts of the program. Once the Grid Layout button is selected, you will see a grid of 12 boxes. These boxes may or may not have any items on it (depending on if it was setup previously). If you right click on a box (blank or one with an item already on it), it will bring you to the Button Edit Form.

On this form, you can select the type of button the box will function as. If you select "Item," the Item ID field will become available, allowing you to choose an item from your inventory to be displayed on the box. Enter a Caption (title for the box), an Item ID, Description (brief description of the item), and Picture (optional). If a picture is selected, the box will display the given picture and allow users to identify the box easier with a picture. Clicking Save will complete the process and you will have a new button on the grid with the item information entered previously.

If you select "Grid" from the Button Edit Form, you can establish a button on the grid as a category that will open up a new grid of 12 items/grids. This is useful if you have multiple departments and want to set up, for example, a Plumbing button that leads to 12 plumbing department items. If you wanted to get really fancy, you could have a Plumbing button that leads to a grid with buttons that lead to even more narrowed results like a Pipes button, Hoses button, Valves button, and more. The possibilities are endless. The set up of a "Grid" button is identical to the Item button, but you won't enter an Item ID for the button. Once the Grid button is saved, left clicking it will open a new set of 12 blank buttons, allowing for additional set up as desired.

Selecting "None" is a quick way of wiping out the information in the current grid button. This is useful for deleting old or unused buttons, freeing them up to be set up again.
Company Setup

Within TransActPOS, there are only a couple of options within System | Company Setup | Properties that affect Grids. The first options are located within the POS Information 4 screen. "Turn 'ON' Grid Looping" will make the Grid reappear after selecting an item from it at the point of sale. By default, this option is unchecked, meaning you will need to select the Grid button every time you wish to input an item on the invoice from the grid. The other option within POS Information 4 is "Automatically Initiate Grid in POS Ring." This option will always show the grid when selecting Ring Sale from the POS menu. If you have this enabled and wish to close the grid, you can do so by simply selecting Close from the Grid menu. The last option is within Rental Manager Pg 2. "Turn 'ON' Rental Grid Looping" will do the same as the looping for POS (grid will reappear after selecting an item).
