Coupons

Retail customers love a lot of things. Great service, efficient store layouts, and speedy checkouts are among a few of these things. Something else customers love is a good deal on a product. Most of the time, these good deals and prices come from either a store sale or promotion, but occasionally customers will receive slips of paper in the mail or online called Coupons that allow them to save money on a purchase. TransActPOS is set up to handle internal promotions, sales, and (most importantly to this week's topic) coupons.

Cash Value

Within TransActPOS, there are two main types of coupons you can create. The first of these is a Cash Value coupon. This coupon allows the customer to receive a flat amount discounted from an invoice. To establish a Cash Value coupon, go to IC | Inventory File and click the Add button to create a new item (may have to close the Find window to click this button). Using the Add Wizard, enter an Item ID and Description for the Cash Value coupon you are creating. After clicking the Next button twice, you will be on the Pricing Information screen. From here, select Coupons as the Item Type and click the Save button twice until you are back on the Inventory screen of the newly created coupon.

Now that the coupon has been created, click the Edit button to enter the remaining information for this coupon. The first thing to change is the Matrix. Currently, there are two values here. Select Cash Value and click Save to make the coupon a Cash Value coupon. Once this is done, click Edit once more. Enter the "$ Off" that this coupon is good for (if left at 0, the system will ask for the coupon value at the point of sale), minimum purchase (minimum total needed for coupon acceptance), and/or Retail Prices Only (coupon will only apply to Retail prices, not any discounted price from a sale or promotion). Once all desired values are entered, click Save.

Percent Off

As mentioned above, there are two main types of coupons you can create with TransActPOS. The other type is a Percent Off coupon. This coupon allows a percentage to be discounted from an invoice total. To establish this type of coupon, follow the same steps as above but change the Matrix to Percent Off. Once this has been saved, click the Edit button again to enter the "% Off" for the coupon. Once this is done, you can also enter a minimum purchase and/or select the Retail Prices Only option. As before, clicking Save will save changes made to this coupon and allow it to be used in your system.

Buy One Get One (BOGO)

Now that you know the basics of setting up a coupon, setting up a Buy One Get One coupon will be simple. To establish one of these, create a Cash Value coupon with zero price. The Item ID can be whatever you want, but make sure the description lets the cashier know exactly what it is (for example "Buy One, Get One Free." With the price set to zero, the system will ask for the price of the coupon when it is entered in on the Ring Sale screen. Since this is a buy one, get one free coupon, you will want to enter the item being bought first and change the quantity to 2. Afterwards, enter the Item ID for the BOGO coupon you just created. When asked for the price, look in the Price column and enter the price located there. When you enter the price, the amount of the invoice should equal the price of one of the entered items, thus giving the customer a buy one, get one free deal. Additional items can be added to the invoice and ending the sale and accepting payment is done as you normally would.
