Kits and Associated Items

Last week we discussed Fee Items and how to set them up. This week, we are diving deeper into the Inventory File and learning how to set up two more supplements for inventory items: Kits and Associated Items. These two features can enhance your inventory and increase sales if utilized properly.

Kits

A Kit is a selling feature that creates a single price point for a grouping of individual inventory items. A retail version of this would be a toolbox that already comes with a hammer, screwdriver, and wrench set. You can create kits to include anything you want and use this as a promotional tool. Each component within the kit is ordered and received as individual items.

To create a kit, go to IC | Inventory File and click the Add button to create a new item using the Inventory Add Wizard. On the first screen, enter an Item ID for the kit. This value can have letters and/or numbers, but if you want to create a bar code for the kit (see eNews #13), enter only numbers. Once a non-duplicate Item ID has been entered, you can enter a description for the kit. Once this information is entered, click Next until you see the "Pricing Information" part of the wizard. Here, you need to change the Item Type to "Kit." You can enter additional information as desired and once you have entered all information you want, click Save twice.

Now that we have created the kit and have been returned to the Inventory screen, we can begin inserting items into the kit. Clicking the Kit Detail button will bring up a list of items within the kit. Since this is an item we just created, this list should be empty. To add items, click the Add button. Here, you can scan or key in the Item ID of the inventory item you wish to add to the kit. Once the item has been entered, the description will be displayed and you can alter the quantity within the kit if necessary. Click OK to add it to the kit. You can add as many items as you wish to the kit. Once all items have been entered, click Close. The on-hand quantity of the kit is based on the on-hands of the individual items placed into the kit. Also, adding items to the kit when the Retail price is set will NOT alter the retail price, so make sure to set this price accordingly.

To sell this kit to customers, enter the Item ID at the point of sale (or scan the bar code if one is created) and the kit will be displayed as a line item. To view the particular items within the kit, click the Show Kit button in the top right of the Ring Sale screen and the individual items will be shown above the kit line item.

Associated Items

Associated Items are similar to a kit, but different in the set up. Any inventory item can have associated items. A good (promotional) example of this would be if a rake was being sold and you are advertising that the customer gets a free pair of gloves with the purchase. You can associate the gloves and a coupon for the amount of the gloves to the rake and all items will be entered when the rake is entered at point of sale.

Associating items is simple. First, go back into the Inventory File and locate the main item. Once the item is found, click the Associated button. This will bring up a listing of items associated to the item ID listed at the top of the Associated Items window. To add a new associated item, click New. Scan or key in the Item ID of the inventory item you wish to associate with the purchase of the main item. Once found, the description of the entered Item ID will be displayed. If this is the correct item, click OK to add it to the list. When you have finished entering the items you desire, click Close.

When the main item is entered on the Ring Sale screen, the main inventory item will be shown and all additional associated item IDs will appear as separate line items on the invoice. This way, if the customer chooses to decline one of the associated items, they can be removed from the invoice without removing the initially scanned item.

To learn more about these processes with screenshots and step by step instructions, search "Kits" or "Associated Items" within WebHelp (link on the left sidebar of this newsletter).
