Early Bird Sale
Some bigger name retail stores advertise sales that require their customers to come in at various times near the opening of the store and they would receive a ticket/coupon that allows them to get a discount on their purchase. For example, Coupon 1 (30%) is handed to the people who show up in the first hour of opening, Coupon 2 (20%) is handed to people who show up in the second hour after opening, and Coupon 3 (10%) is handed to people who arrive in the third hour. TransActPOS now has the ability (as of version 3.035) to allow these types of sales. Within this newsletter, you will learn the benefit of this process as well as how to setup your system to perform this sale.

Setting Up the Coupon(s)
Probably the most important step, setting up the coupon(s) needs to be done before the sale can be initiated. Follow the steps below to complete this process:
- Go to IC | Inventory File | Add and use the Add Wizard to create an ID and description for the coupon. Click Next twice until you are on the Pricing Information screen. Change the Item Type to Coupon. Click Save twice.
- After the coupon is saved from the step above, the system will bring you to the Inventory screen for the newly created item. By default, the coupon is on a "dollars off" setup. If this is the type of sale you wish to create, the only thing left to do is to setup the amount of dollars off in the "$ Off" field. If you wish to set the coupon to a "% Off" format, change the Matrix to "Percent Off." Once this is done, enter the percentage in the "% Off" field and click Save.
- This step is optional. You can just print off slips of paper made within a Word Processor that has the ID created on it. This way, when the customer brings the piece of paper to the register, you enter the ID and the system will locate the coupon. Optionally, you can create a bar code to print on the coupon.
- Repeat the process for additional coupons.

Creating a Barcode
To create a bar code, you must first download a font. There are many out there, but the following link will take you to a site with a free one. Once the file is downloaded, double click on the file. Inside the zip file, there are two .TTF files. These are the two fonts included in the download. Left click hold to select both items. Once both are highlighted, right click and select Copy. Now, locate the C:\ on your workstation. Double left click the Windows folder and open the Fonts folder. Inside this folder, right click in empty space and click Paste to install these fonts on your system. Now that the fonts are installed, we can open WordPad and create the bar code. WordPad is located inStart Menu | All Programs | Accessories . Locate the drop down menu on the top of the program and change the font to the bar code looking font (located near the top of the "b" fonts). Next, change the font size to a desired size. Anything above 24 should work fine. When creating the barcode, you want to put an asterisk (*) by holding the Shift key and pressing the 8 key at the beginning and end of the barcode. For example, if you want the coupon's barcode number to be 12345, enter *12345*. If you want, you can create the rest of the printable coupon within WordPad or create it in a different program and copy-paste the barcode into the new program. The final step is to establish the barcode ID within TransActPOS as a lookup number on the coupon. Within TransActPOS, go back into the Inventory File and locate the coupon. Once found, click on the Lookup By tab and click the Add button. In the Number field, enter the number from the creation of the barcode (the example above would be 12345) and select Short Barcode on the right. Clicking OK will save the ID to the item. Now, when the barcode you created is scanned, the system will locate the coupon and enter it in at the Point of Sale.

Benefit
We tested this process with a store around the holiday season and increased their throughput of their two registers to 177 invoices in a single hour of sales. This annual sale would have typically created long lines at the register and required multiple steps by the clerk to complete the sale. When asking the store owner how the sale went, he stated that "it did not really feel like a sale because we did not have those long lines like we normally did with our previous system. In fact we were able to process more sales per hour than we ever had before!"
