Dear Parents,

It's hard to believe that we've already arrived at the end of  the school year, but I suppose it's harder for those of you who have Senior students to believe that graduation is on the horizon. All of you are welcome to join us for our final Mass of the school year, which will be on Friday, May 10th at 10:25 am in the auditorium. Also, feel free to join us for the Baccalaureate Mass, which will be held at St. Benedict Cathedral on Friday, May 17th at 7:00 pm. It should be a wonderful celebration for our Seniors.

We have received a great grace from God, who has established this Memorial school community and sustains us in the work we do. It's a grace that we shouldn't take for granted, because we all have a role to play in responding to what God has done for us. I hope that you will take a moment to thank the Lord for His goodness and for the gifts we have all received this school year.

Thank you all for a wonderful year and I hope you and your students have a safe and relaxing summer.

Peace,

Fr. Alex

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

"We don't love our kids because of what they do, but because of who they are."

We, at Memorial, are completing one academic year, even as we prepare for another. We say good-bye to the class of 2013 even as we welcome the class of 2017. It is worth our time to ask ourselves what we want to accomplish for our students over their four years at Memorial? In other words, what do we expect a Memorial student to experience over four years?

I suggest that the fundamental mission of any school must be to provide an academically excellent education. Academic excellence means that we work in partnership with our students and their families to help them discover and develop both their talents and their limitations.   "A study by the National Parent-Teachers Organization revealed that in the average American school, eighteen negatives are identified for every positive that is pointed out. The Wisconsin study revealed that when children enter the first grade, 80 percent of them feel pretty good about themselves, but by the time they get to the sixth grade, only 10 percent of them have good self-images." All students should graduate with positive self-images. In any school, students discover both their talents and their limitations. This has nothing to do with their value as persons. Neil Eskelin in his book Jump-Start wrote, "Here's a message that needs to be drilled into the hearts and minds of every mom and dad: You don't love your kids because of what they do, but because of who they are.

Simply rewarding children with affection because of their accomplishments is like a circus trainer giving a dog some food every time he jumps through a hoop. The dog isn't loved for himself, but for his actions.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, the popular talk show host, has a new book for children titled, "Why Do You Love Me?" Part of the story includes a mother explaining to her son that it is not what he does that makes her love him -- she loves him because he is unique and because he is her son.

You don't show affection simply because a child is good at karate or gymnastics. Every mom, dad and grandparent needs to memorize the words of a long-time popular song: "I love you most of all because you're you."

This is also true in our school. We expect that all our students learn that they are important to us because of who they are and not because of what they accomplish. They are all gifts from God who bring God's presence to our community each day. I hope that this is the first and most important lesson that they learn at Memorial. There is a humorous story that I would like to share with you.

"The teacher asked her class what each wanted to become when they grew up. A chorus of responses came from all over the room.

"A football player," "A doctor," "An astronaut," "The president," "A fireman," "A teacher," "A race car driver."

Everyone that is, except Tommy.

The teacher noticed he was sitting there quiet and still.

So she said to him, "Tommy, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

"Possible" Tommy replied.

"Possible?" asked the teacher.

"Yes," Tommy said. "My mom is always telling me I'm impossible. So when I get to be big, I want to be possible."

We expect all of our students to be possible.

The second lesson we expect them to learn is how they can take the knowledge they have learned and the skills that they have mastered to bring God's love to the rest of the world. We expect our graduates to be academically qualified young men and women who are confident with themselves, who seek to make their communities better places by sharing the love that God has for them with all those that they meet. I might suggest that if our students have mastered these lessons, then we will have truly prepared them for life.

May I wish a Happy Mothers' Day to all of our Mothers and Grandmothers who spend so much time sharing their love with us and may God bless you and your family with a joyful and restful summer as we come to the end of another school year.

REMINDER: As we begin the 4th quarter, we are asking parents to honor a request from Memorial High School.  This request allows offices to conduct school business efficiently.  The request involves student appointments during a school day.  When a student has an appointment during the school day, a parent note must be sent with your son or daughter to the attendance office on the day of the appointment.  This note should be brought to the attendance office before school.  We will issue an early dismissal note to the student.  Texting or communicating via cell phone is prohibited during school hours.  Please refrain from texting or calling your student during school hours.  If you need to contact your son or daughter during the school day, please call Memorial High School at 812-476-4973.

In order to practice or participate in an extracurricular or athletic practice or event, a student MUST BE in school for the ENTIRE DAY.  If a student misses more than thirty (30) minutes of a school day, he/she would not be eligible to practice or participate in after school activities.  Verified doctor or dental appointments do not count as absences.

Dear Parents & Guardians:

The end of the 2012-2013 school year is quickly approaching. For seniors, this time of year signals the beginning of the next phase of their lives. For underclassmen, this signals the beginning of summer vacation. As we prepare for the end of the year, we would also ask that you make sure that all affairs between you, your student, and the school have been properly handled. These items include:

  1. Full payment of Tuition and Fee balances with the school Business Office
  2. Reconciling any negative balances your student may be carrying with the cafeteria
  3. Returning outstanding items with the school media center
  4. Other items due to the school

If you have already taken care of these items, we thank you. If you have not taken care of these items, please have these items settled by Friday, May 10, 2013. Failure to do so may prohibit your student(s) from sitting for final exams. Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

The Educational CHOICE Charitable Trust

The Indiana School Scholarship Tax Credit Program, passed in the summer of 2009, is designed to provide scholarship support for thousands of low and middle income families to enroll their children in the private or parochial school of their choice. Donors (individuals or corporations) are eligible to take advantage of a 50% credit against their state tax liability for contributions made to a qualified scholarship granting organization (SGO). Reitz Memorial High School has partnered with a qualified SGO called

The Educational CHOICE Charitable Trust.  Click here for additional information.

Service Hours Reminder

We are in the fourth quarter of our school year and it is time to remind your students of their service hour requirement.  The mission statement of MHS includes fostering a commitment to service.  Our philosophy is to develop a Christian view of reality through the presentation of the Gospel values and the exercise of Chirstian life.  We regard Christian service as an integral componenet of the education process at every grade.  All students are required to perform fifteen hours of service each year for their parish/place of worship, their community or school.  One-half of those hours must be completed at their parish/place of workship.  Service hour forms are available in Ms. Morris' room 303.

All service hours need to be turned in to your Theology teachers or Ms. Morris no later than May 10, 2013.  All seniors must have a minimum of 60 hours turned in, one half from your parish/place of worship for completion of the graduation requirement.

Spiritual Life Committee

Do you understand what I just did for you?  You address me as a "Teacher" and "Lord", and fitting enough,  for that is what I am.  But if I washed your feet -I who am Teacher and Lord- then you must wash each other's feet.  What I just did was to give you an example:  as I have done,  so you must do.  John 13:13-15

Mrs. Falcony, chair of the Theology Department, is working on some very exciting enhancements to the Memorial Service Program for students.  The proposed plan will replace the current program with several opportunities, spread throughout the year, for our students to participate in larger, school-wide projects that will have a significant community impact.  Students will be involved in all areas of the project, from planning to implementation.

We will need parent involvement and support to assist Mrs. Falcony and the students with these projects.  If you feel called to work with students to make a difference in our community,  serving  on the revamped PTO Spiritual Life Committee is a great opportunity.

Proactive Parenting - Dealing with Conflict By Way of Communication Styles

One thing that can destroy any of our attempts to deal with any type of problem is the way approach it.   There are three simple styles to see how we handle conflict in our lives:

Aggressive (Not Preferable) - This style is typically identified as the person who shouts, say's hurtful comments, physically threatens (breaking, slamming, throwing, hitting), or visibly looks like they are about to transform into a Hulk. When they are upset then everyone knows it and they know not to get in their way or you will literally be hurt emotionally or even physically. While this style can be effective in getting people to do what they want it can lead to rebellion where the teen loses all respect and any desire to be close to the parent or even be around.

Passive (Not Preferable) - This style is typically identifies as the person who has the smile, laughing, kind as a butterfly, or seems to not be bothered but underneath is becoming a ticking bomb. They are bothered a little at first, but eventually the problem continues to grow underneath like a balloon continually being expanded until it cannot hold anymore and then BOOM! While this style is nice and seems like patience and kindness to those that get on our nerves, it is being dishonest with ones self and does not ever fix the problems. It's just hoping the problem fixes itself.

Assertive (Preferable) - This style is typically identified as the person who is able to identify the problem and taking the initiative to be brave enough or controlled enough to communicate one's feelings regarding the problem and their expected change and consequences if the problem continues to persist.

For example, instead of yelling or nagging the teen about their uncompleted chores, the parent need only say "I feel disrespected and very angry with you when you neglect to do the dishes until 15 minutes before bed or you do not even do them at all. As a result, I want/expect/would like you to do them first thing after dinner. If you don't do them right way, then you can expect no phone privileges for the weekend." All is said and done. What will happen next time was clearly communicated and the challenge then becomes following through with your word. If the teen neglects to follow your request next time, then immediately communicate their violation of your expectation and the consequences they are to deal with. What typically happens is we use our yelling, nagging, or threatening as the consequence to get the teen to do what we want them to, but it does not work with teens because they eventually tune you out like a radio station. When all they have to do for their consequence is hear your scream, nag, or threaten possible consequences then they know they can continue on in their behavior. They are not breaking a sweat but the parent sure is working up a sweat and all types of frustration. Essentially, it all becomes a matter of setting your boundaries with clear communication and expectations of what their behavior will result in the future and the consequences have to matter to the teen. If taking away their phone doesn't matter because they can still talk to everyone on Facebook or twitter then your point is not made clearly enough.

Just remember it's a day in and day out process...takes practice and constant working at to get better at.

For more information on how to set clear boundaries and become more assertive in your style of dealing with conflict and problems look into checking Boundaries with Teens by Cloud and Townsend at the local EVSC library or feel free to contact me at joelfehsenfeld@evdio.org.

SENIORS: NEW PROCEDURE FOR FINAL TRANSCRIPTS!

All seniors are required to submit a final transcript to the college or university that they are attending in the fall. In the past, the counseling office has mailed them. With Parchment, transcripts will now be sent electronically. Seniors will need to log in to their parchment account and select the college they will be attending and select "Next Grading Period Transcript". If a student is participating in a sport in college, they will also need to select the NCAA as a recipient. This needs to be done before May 31st!

SUMMER SCHEDULE FOR COUNSELORS The counselors will be at Memorial until May 31st and will return 2 weeks prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year. Mrs. McKinney and Mrs. Bennett will check email intermittently over break. Please double check your student's registration list on Parent Connect and contact their counselor as soon as possible with questions and/or change requests.

SUMMER SCHOOL PERMISSION FORM

Any student who wishes to take a summer course AND receive Memorial credit must first obtain permission by their counselor. Summer School Permission Forms are available in the counseling office and must be completed prior to beginning any summer course (besides Driver's Education).

SAT/ACT INFORMATION Students frequently ask about resources for practicing SAT,

ACT or PSAT, for information on careers and ideas of where to go after high school. Our Counseling Office has lots of materials, but the local library offers special services, too. You can go to www.learningexpresslibrary.com and use your library card number as a username for having access to lots of materials. The Evansville Library pays to offer this to its patrons. Use it. The Henderson County Public Library also has ACT and SAT preparation and practice tests. Here is the link to the website: www.hcpl.org. In the left hand column is a link to the Learning Express Library. Card holders can set up free accounts through this portal using their library card number and password. There are two practice tests for each portion of the ACT as well as online preparation courses for each subject area. Warrick County students might want to check and see if their libraries subscribe to this service, too.

It is highly recommended that the Class of 2014 test in May or June so that they can apply early in their Senior year for Colleges.   Since the tests are on Saturday mornings, it is important to be aware of sport and other school function dates and times that may affect a student's concentration. Students who don't test in the spring of their Junior year are encouraged to test in early fall. Fall ACT test dates are September 21 and October 26. Fall SAT test dates are not available yet.

.

ALSO, PLEASE REMEMBER TO INCLUDE MEMORIAL'S SCHOOL CODE (150980) ON REGISTRATIONS TO ENSURE THAT WE RECEIVE LABELS TO INCLUDE ON EACH STUDENT'S TRANSCRIPT.

Remember that high school students who took the PSAT/NMSQT® in October 2011 have

free access to My College QuickStart. Instructions on how to access this site is on your student's score report. This is an interactive planning experience that lets your student build a portfolio to document career and college explorations. After reading about any

college, major, or career, you can rate your interest and record your thoughts. You can view these entries later in a special section of the site called My Plan.

NCAA-IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES

If there is any chance your student may want to play a sport in college, it is important that he/she registers with the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly known as the Clearinghouse) at the end of their junior year. The new email address is: http://www.eligibilitycenter.org. The following steps must be taken to qualify for a Division I or II scholarship:

  1. Complete the Student Release Form online at the above address.
  2. Complete the Amateurism Questionnaire online.
  3. Pay fee online or submit fee waiver ($60 domestic and $85 for incoming international students).
  1. Submit current official high school transcript (at least 6 semesters) as well as all past transcripts from previous schools.
  1. Submit official test scores electronically (must be from testing agency). The Eligibility Center will not accept test scores from the high school transcript.

The Eligibility Center code is 9999.

A final official transcript (at the end of senior year) must be requested by the student through Parchment to be sent to the Eligibility Center for final certification.

The above listed website is a great resource for information regarding the certification process. By clicking on the "Resource" tab, you can download "Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete" which will help in answering questions you might have. The counseling office can also assist you.

HONORS NIGHT & HONORS BOOK On Honors Night, May 6th, a college scholarship will not necessarily be mentioned or awarded. Unless a representative from a school is present or a certificate is sent to the Counseling Office, no mention of scholarships is made for a student. If the student notifies us that he/she is receiving a scholarship, it will be included in the Honors Book.

An "Honors Book" will be printed and distributed to students on May 9th. The book will include honors that we are aware of and have been received to date for the 2012-2013 school year.   Each student's list of honors is based on information supplied on a form which all Seniors received in early April. It was each student's responsibility to fill out the form and return it to Mrs. Bennett or Mrs. McKinney for inclusion in the Honors Book. The deadline for submissions was April 30th.

SCHOLARSHIPS A detailed description of each scholarship application currently in the Counseling Office can be found at the Memorial web site - www.reitzmemorial.org. Click on "Academics:, then "Guidance & Counseling" and then on "Current Scholarships Available". If you do not have access to the Internet, a copy of the list of scholarships and their descriptions is available through the Counseling Office. Continue to encourage your student to stop by the Counseling Office weekly to make sure they don't miss out on announced scholarships.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES The Counseling Office has brochures and information for many summer programs on college campuses around the country and right here in Evansville. These opportunities are posted on the Memorial website under the "Academics" tab, then "Guidance & Counseling", then click "Summer Opportunities".

Class of 2013: We would like to wish all of you the best of luck as you enter a new chapter in your lives. It has been a pleasure working with you!
