Dear Parents,

The season of Advent is upon us and our Spiritual Life Committee did a wonderful job of preparing and implementing a prayer service before Thanksgiving to get us started on the path toward Christmas.  I know this is a busy time for many students and parents, but I hope that in the midst of it all, you can make time to do some spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ as a family.

Our last all-school Mass of the semester will be at 10:25 am on Wednesday, December 12: the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe.  You are always welcome to join us for our liturgies.  Also, don't forget that if you have a prayer request you can submit it through our website under the Spirituality tab.

We have had a wonderful first semester! I continue to be amazed by the generosity and kindness of our students.  Thank you for your work as parents and if I can help in any way, please let me know.

Peace,

Fr. Alex Zenthoefer

Chaplain

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the entire Memorial Community, may you and your family have a very Blessed Christmas and a Holy New Year! May our God who called each of us into existence out of His deep and passionate love bless you and your family!

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of that mad rush to Christmas. Black Friday and now On-Line Monday are predictions of the rush and pressure that we will endure until Christmas. Sunday, December 2, also marks the beginning of Advent, which is a different kind of preparation for Christmas. It is a time when we are invited to focus on the presence of God in our life and how we respond to that presence.

A Reitz Memorial education is not simply about academics. Reitz Memorial is a Catholic community of families, teachers, alumni and students that focuses not just on academics, but also on the kind of adults that we expect our students to become. We work in partnership to create an environment in which our students can grow and develop spiritually, intellectually and socially.

The message of the Christmas story is that God became man in the person of Jesus Christ. In so doing, God united himself to humanity and reveals himself to us through the people around us. It also tells us that we are all called to be one in Christ and with one another.

The story of the Birth of Jesus tells us that God became man but most people were too busy or too preoccupied to notice or recognize this wonderful event, and so he was laid in a manger because there was no room for him anywhere else.

As the leader of a Catholic school, I am always concerned about how our students experience God's presence in their lives and how they respond to that presence. Like those people in the time of Christ, I sense that we can also be too busy or too preoccupied to recognize the presence of God in our lives.

It is not enough, however, to simply recognize God's presence. We are also called to respond to that presence. Christmas is not just an historical event. It is about the present. It is about how we make God's presence alive in our lives and in the world around us. In the second reading from the Christmas Eve midnight Mass Saint Paul reminds us, "The grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all people, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for Himself a people of His own who are zealous for good deeds." Titus 2:11-14

I have always been struck by Saint Luke's Nativity narrative. He describes angels from God announcing to Zechariah, Mary and the Shepherds the births of both John the Baptist and Jesus. In all three instances he quotes the angels telling them "Do not be afraid" for I have good news for you, "and you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice," Luke 1: 14

Let us all take the advice God's messenger. Let us celebrate with joy God's presence in, and among us. Allow me to conclude with the words of the angels to the shepherds as they sat on the hillsides. "The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." Luke 2: 10-14  I am enclosing with this letter a of copy of the story, The Perfect Gift the author is unkown. I hope that you enjoy it.  May God bless you and your family during the Christmas season and throughout the New Year!

The Perfect Gift

It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree at this time of the year for the past 10 years or so.

It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. Oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it. You know, the overspending, the frantic running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder for Grandma, the gifts given in desperation because you couldn't think of anything else.

Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way. Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling at the junior high level at the school he attended. Shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner city church. The kids were mostly black.

These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their spiffy blue and gold uniforms and sparkling new wrestling shoes.

As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without head gear. It was a luxury the ragtag team obviously couldn't afford. We ended up walloping them. We took every weight class. And as each of their boys got up from the mat, he swaggered around in his tatters with false bravado, a kind of street pride that couldn't acknowledge defeat.

Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, "I wish just one of them could have won," he said. "They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them." Mike loved kids-all kids. He understood kids in competitive situations, having coached little league football, baseball and lacrosse. That's when the idea for his present came.

That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner city church. On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me.

His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and in succeeding years. For each Christmas, I followed the tradition - one year sending a group of mentally challenged youngsters to a hockey game, another year a check to a pair of elderly brothers whose home had burned to the ground the week before Christmas - on and on...

The envelope became the highlight of our Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning and our children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents.

As the children grew, the toys gave way to more practical presents, but the envelope never lost its allure. Still, the story doesn't end there.

You see, we lost Mike last year due to cancer. When Christmas rolled around, I was still so wrapped in grief that I barely got the tree up. Yet Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree, and in the morning, it was joined by three more. Each of our children, unbeknownst to the others, had placed an envelope on the tree for their dad.

The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further, with our grandchildren standing around the tree with wide-eyed anticipation, watching as their fathers take down their envelopes.  Mike's spirit, like the spirit of Christmas, will always be with us.

Festivities and final exams, decorations and Christmas Dance, winter wonder land views and winter weather advisories-- December brings with it that hodge-podge mixture of anticipation and perhaps anxiety.  We eagerly look toward time together, as friends and family, and time away from the demands of work and school.  We embrace the spirit of the holidays, the joy of Advent, and the peace brought by Christ, and we muddle through the cold winter weather, the countless sales, the baking and card sending, and bargain hunting.

To my students, I remind you that school does not end until 2:35 on Dec 20th.  Study for finals, prepare for class, and make the most of these last few weeks in the semester.  Take a moment to thank those-- your teachers, coaches, parents, and classmates-- for making this first semester a good one.

To my parents, I ask you to keep us all in your prayers.  Give teachers patience and students perseverance.  Pray in thanksgiving for all that 2012 brought us and pray with hope for 2013.

And to all of you-- parents, teachers, staff, students, alumni--as the weather turns colder and the nights feel darker, I encourage you to seek the warmth of your faith, the bright light of friendship, and the comfort of this community.

Merry Christmas.

Youth First

Village Ready to Help Substance Abuser

By Emily Sommers, Youth First Social Worker-Castle Jr. High School

If you are worried about a teen who may be abusing or dependent on alcohol or other drugs, make sure you put first things first.

As a parents, caregivers, concerned friends, and/or family members, it is imperative to remember that you are not alone when faced with the challenge of seeking help for one who is dear to you and may be addicted.

In fact, it often takes a village to get these individuals the optimal help and support they need to overcome the problem and come closer to a solution.  Even if you believe your child or teen is just "experimenting" with substances or alcohol, it is important to take action right away.

Casual drug use can quickly turn into drug abuse, dependence or addiction, and can lead to social and emotional problems, declining mental health, failing grades, accidents, legal trouble and serious health issues.

If you are at all concerned about your child or teen or just have a bad feeling, you can and should intervene by engaging in productive conversations. As you talk, remain calm, share your concerns and, most importantly, listen to your child.

In the process of these conversations, you will strengthen the parent-child relationship and help motivate your teen to make changes or accept help as needed.  Help for suspected substance abuse or dependence can involve a variety of approaches.

Youth First Social Workers are available in many schools to provide confidential assistance. They regularly assess and refer students and families to services.

Primary care physicians also can screen and refer patients to the appropriate therapist or agency for additional help.

This region has a number of skilled and devoted therapists and agencies specializing in substance abuse and dependency issues. They include Mulberry Center, aha!, Integrity Psychological & Counseling, ADAPT Counseling Services, Southwest Behavioral Health Care and Evansville Psychiatric Associates. They can provide needed direction and support with substance abuse intervention.

Deaconess Cross Pointe and Brentwood Meadows in Newburgh also offer support through evaluation and referral as well as intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs and inpatient opportunities for care and support, if needed.

The United Way's 2-1-1 help line is a referral source for other agencies in the community.

Just remember, you can do this. As a parent, caregiver,or loved one of a suspected substance abuser, it is not uncommon to feel alone, ashamed and confused. Turn to the village of resources available in our community to provide strength, hope and courage, so you can focus on the solution instead of the problem of addiction.

RMHS Highlights

Key Club members have already been very active, selling more than 300 Halloween Coupon Books to support Easter Seals, collecting change in the UNICEF boxes for the Eliminate Project, serving downtown at the Potters Wheel soup kitchen, participating in the Buddy Walk, helping with baseboards, closet shelving, and overall clean-up at the Habitat Catholic Build, as well as helping MHS weekly with the huge task of recycling plastic bottles.

Poinsettia Sale! We are now selling those beautiful pink, white, or red plants that brighten any holiday décor! These poinsettias come in 6.5 inch pots and cost only $10.00 each. The money we earn from this sale helps us support Riley Hospital and other Key Club service projects. Thank you in advance for your support!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Trick-or-Treat for Cans service project. We collected car loads of non-perishable items that the Clubbers took to Little Sisters of the Poor. We are very grateful to our Memorial neighbors who contributed.

February 2013, a group of seniors will be go to Washington D.C. to participate in Close Up, a nationally recognized non-for-profit organization that helps empower young people to take a more active role in their communities and government.  During this week students will have the opportunity to:

- Meet with students from all over the country and from different countries to learn about government

- Visit historical monuments and discuss government's proper role in people's lives

- Participate in a liberal vs. conservative debate with experts in the issues

- Meet with embassy representatives about their role in foreign countries

- Meet with the congressman and visit the Supreme Court & Library of Congress

Students are looking for opportunities to raise funds to help offset the cost of the trip.  Currently, we are raking leaves around the Memorial area.  We are willing to take on other opportunities to gain support.  If you are looking for help with a project or if you would simply like to help sponsor the students at Memorial, please contact Mr. Aaron Schmitt at aaronschmitt@reitzmemorial.org

SamStrong

While most of us are celebrating the holidays with our friends and family, children with cancer have one simple item on their wish list: a cure.

Sam Featherstone is one such patient. Diagnosed with brain cancer at age 15, the Newburgh teenager has been battling the illness for the last three years. He has had multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and three brain surgeries. Despite all of these efforts, the cancer has persisted. A recent MRI at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital showed the cancer has aggressively returned, and there are currently no more treatment options. Sam is now on hospice care at home.

With his aspirations to become a pediatric oncologist unlikely to happen, Sam wants to help find a cure for childhood brain cancer. In partnership with St. Jude, he is organizing an event to raise awareness of pediatric brain tumors and to raise money for research.

"SamStrong: Search for the Cure" will take place on December 27 at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Newburgh. The night will feature pizza, board games and a silent auction. Sam, as well as a representative from St. Jude, will give a short presentation on the urgency of research in this field.

How can you help? Here are ways to be part of this inspirational evening:

 Donate an item for the silent auction (nothing is too big or too small)

Donations can be dropped off in Mrs. Popham's Office

 Give a monetary contribution (any amount is a step closer to a cure)

 Become a sponsor (perks include signage at the event, your logo on the SamStrong.org website, and exposure with our other media efforts)

If you'd like to become involved, please complete the attached sheet or contact Jill Working Gander (568-4320; Jillworking@me.com) or Michele Paris (455-8881; samstrongdonation@gmail.com). Please know that donations are tax-deductible and we will provide you with a receipt for your records.
