Summer 2016

Black Mamas Matter Toolkit Now Available!

In June 2015, the Center for Reproductive Rights and SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective hosted Black Mamas Matter, a cross-sector convening of leaders. Researchers, service providers, policy experts, and community organizers gathered to identify innovative strategies for improving maternal health outcomes for Black women. Black Mamas Matter reconvened in June 2016 in Atlanta to release this toolkit. This resource was inspired and informed by the insights shared at the 2015 convening, and in countless phone calls, meetings, and emails in between. It is a collaborative effort, and one that all partners hope to continue building upon!

The toolkit includes:
* Data and research on maternal health in the U.S. with a special focus on racial disparities.
* Personal stories about sexual, reproductive, and maternal health from Black women living in the South.
* An overview of policy recommendations. The policy brief is followed by a list of resources that advocates can consult for more information.

Read the toolkit here.

Preconception Care in Scotland

June had some fascinating updates and reports from Scotland! Read the 45-page 'Plain English' report, "Missed Periods: Scotland's opportunities for better pregnancies, healthier parents and thriving babies the first time . . . and every time"  by Dr. Jonathan Sher.
OR you can check out this much briefer 'taster' version that serves as an introduction and overview, "Prepared for Pregnancy?: Preconception health, education and care in Scotland"

As intended, they are independent, national reports based upon the latest and best available research and related evidence not only from Scotland, but also across the OECD countries.

These data and findings were accompanied and enhanced by discussions and correspondence with more than one hundred key individuals and organisations (primarily in Scotland), as well as visiting numerous websites.

Also coming from the great land of Scotland, read this approach for getting attention to health equity and infant mortality: "Introducing the Holyrood baby - a letter from the editor.
