we really felt moved to help.

Arts and the AC
This November we want to share two great programs that reflect the Accelerator Centre's commitment to arts in the community, and community entrepreneurship.
Sharing entrepreneurial knowledge at Grand Valley Institute (GVI) By: Andrew Jackson, VP Client Services, Accelerator Centre
On October 12th, I visited Grand Valley Institution (GVI) as a representative of the Accelerator Centre. Together with a very talented and accomplished group of community leaders, my task was to deliver four sessions over two weekends to women who were interested in learning more about starting and running a business. This year marks the 3rd year we have attended, and it has quickly become a highlight of the year not only for me, but the numerous volunteers that help teach the course as well.
One question I hear often is, "Why do you go to Grand Valley?" My answer is very simple: "because the women let us."
The first year we attended GVI we had 12 women attend the course. The last two years we have had 24 and 25 women, respectively, attend. The women are respectful and polite and ready to learn.
We understand the women are in GVI for a variety of reasons and the courts have decided they warranted some form of punishment. We also know that when they are released from prison they deserve every opportunity to reintegrate into their communities in a positive way. I personally look
forward to the day that I can enter a business that is owned by one of the women that attended our entrepreneur Sessions.
You can read the full, unabbreviated blog here: The day I went to prison.
Fresh Start Creations - Unique, handcrafted art a welcome catalyst
In 2009, the Stride Program of Community Justice Initiative began an exciting new initiative called
Fresh Start Creations. Fresh Start Creations is an innovative program where federally sentenced women [at Grand Valley Institute] create artisan pieces that are sold in the community, with 100%
of the proceeds donated back to charities in Waterloo Region.
The program offers a unique way for women to learn valuable business skills, as well as come together as a community and explore their creative side. The women are exposed to techniques such as watercolor, collage, and encaustics they may never otherwise have had the opportunity to work with. Many are surprised at their abilities and their self-confidence is bolstered as a result. The
creations become a catalyst for conversation, sharing, and reflection.
Here at the Accelerator Centre, you will find a sampling of the colourful, unique works of art in our main lobby. With Christmas right around the corner, consider purchasing a gift for yourself, or your friends and family! The entire proceeds are donated to local charities.
For more information on Fresh Start Creations please contact Kim Kool at kimk@cjiwr.com or
