Two of America's Best!

Davie County High School and Davie County Early College High School are two of 73 high schools in North Carolina to be recognized in Newsweek's list of America's Best High Schools 2013. Newsweek identifies 2000 high schools across America that best prepare students for college. Newsweek considers graduation rate, percentage of graduates who were accepted into college, AP tests per student, average SAT and/or ACT score, AP exam scores, and the percentage of students enrolled in at least one AP course. Congratulations to all of our students and staff for this outstanding recognition. This recognition is a reflection of the hard work that takes place across our district from Pre-K to 12!

Arts Smart Festival

The Third Annual Arts Smart Festival will be held this Saturday, May 11, 2013 at North Davie Middle School on Farmington Road in Mocksville, NC beginning with opening ceremonies on the field at 9:00 with the award winning Jamestown Pipe and Drum Ensemble and closing at 1:00 pm with a concert by the 90+ member Davie County Schools Combined Elementary Chorus. All of The Arts Departments in Davie County Schools will be participating in the festival.

The 2013 focus is participating in the arts as a family. We have designed many hands-on arts making activities for various age groups, singing together opportunities to share, pottery making, Chinese Calligraphy workshop, Japanese ink-painting, and dance through the ages for fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, and a session for brothers and sisters.

Children can experiment with a variety of instruments, interactive music technologies, try their hand at print making, imagine themselves as a member of the Royal Court of King Louis XIV, have their faces painted and join in a traditional bagpipe parade.

Come and be a part of it ...Arts are for everyone!

Admission is free and refreshments will be available on-site!

Facilities Update- New Davie County High School

New DCHS
Dr. Hartness presented the Board of Education's plan for one new high school to the Davie County Board of County Commissioners on April 1, 2013. The Board of Education has requested that the Board of Commissioners place a bond referendum on the November 2013 ballot to allow the people of Davie County an opportunity to vote on one new high school. To read the details of the Board's plan, please visit our website dedicated to the plan at http://www.davie.k12.nc.us/district/new-davie-high. To download an information flyer and frequently asked questions document, "Facts on the New Davie High School," click here. The Board of Commissioners took no action on the request at their May meeting.  We urge the Commissioners to take action to proceed with a November Bond Referendum at their June meeting.

Give Five - Read Five

State Superintendent June Atkinson wants every elementary school student in the state to begin summer vacation with at least five new books to read, and has launched a statewide initiative to make that happen. Speaking during a press conference at Hilburn Academy, Atkinson challenged parents, business leaders and community members to donate five new or gently-used books to their local elementary school during the month of May. To read more, click here.

Locally, books can be donated directly to the elementary school of your choice or delivered to the Administrative Offices located at 220 Cherry Street in Mocksville. Please visit our website at www.davie.k12.nc.us for more information.

Davie Community Foundation Resolution

On April 22, the Board of Directors of the Davie Community Foundation passed a resolution supporting the decision of the Board of Education to invest in the students and build one new high school for Davie County. In its 25th year, the Community Foundation has awarded over $4.2 million in grants and scholarships. The annual scholarship banquet was held last week, The Oscars, where 57 scholarships were handed out to our seniors. Please visit our district website to see a photo of scholarship recipients. We want to thank the Community Foundation for their commitment to our students and staff and the future of Davie County!

Thank You Davie County- A note from the Superintendent

We have experienced a number of tragic events over the past few months, from the death of three of our students, to losses in the families of our staff and students. I want to thank our entire community for your support of our school family. It is so comforting to know that no matter what happens, there are genuine people in Davie County who reach out and share their love and compassion in times of difficulty. I especially want to thank our churches and pastors who have been by our side in so many ways.  Please continue to keep those who are experiencing challenges in your thoughts and prayers. I hope each of you have a wonderful last few weeks of school!

Sincerely,

Hartness Signature
