School Safety Enhancements
Recently, Conestoga has taken steps to improve our school safety measures without negatively impacting our students' school experience. All of our entrances are now locked and secured during school hours. A buzz-in station has been installed at the main entrance, which allows visitors to request access into the building via an intercom system. Parents can expect to be asked their name and the purpose of their visit when they arrive at the buzz-in station outside of the main entrance. In addition to signing-in and wearing a visitor's badge, we are asking visitors to show photo identification once they come inside and report to the reception desk. Parents and volunteers who visit Conestoga frequently may not be asked to show photo identification if they are immediately familiar to our lobby staff. Procedures have been put in place to maintain an "open campus" for those upperclassmen that have lunch privileges or are permitted to arrive late / leave early. In addition to the changes described above, the district has taken many other steps recently to reduce the risk of aggressive intruders and improve our response protocols during emergency situations. Some of these steps include: - Parents and students should not be alarmed by a police presence at Conestoga during the day and at school functions.
- We are applying a high quality impact resistant film to some windows and doors.
- Panic buttons will be installed in several locations around the school as a way to alert emergency responders in the event of a crisis.
- We have added to our camera surveillance capabilities.
- A safety consultant has been hired to conduct safety audits of all district facilities and emergency procedures in order to advise us on any necessary changes and improvements going forward.
We all recognize that school safety extends beyond the enhancements described above. Please continue to encourage your children to be a positive and contributing member of our school community. Our students are just as much a part of maintaining a safe building as the adults that work here. Students should know that help is available to them from their teachers, counselors, administrators and/or any other staff members that they trust. Working together, we are striving to provide our students with valuable learning opportunities while limiting the safety risks that are present in any school environment. Thank you for your support.
