Researchers Identify Protein Needed for Repair of Injured Kidney Cells

A research team, led by CCTS L-Pilot awardee Jianjie Ma, PhD, has identified a protein in kidney cells, known as MG53, that is essential for kidneys to repair themselves after acute injury. Ma's research team has also shown that MG53 repairs heart, lung and skeletal muscle cells.

In addition to the L-Pilot award, the research team was supported by the Translational Therapeutics Think Tank (T4) and the Regulatory Knowledge and Support program.

"(This protein) is a key component of cellular self-repair. Identification of MG53 as a vital component of reno-protection could lead to new preventive or therapeutic treatments for acute kidney failure," Ma said.

New Software Analyzes Human Genomes Faster than Other Available Technologies, Empowering Population Scale Genomic Analysis

Investigators at Nationwide Children's Hospital have developed an analysis "pipeline" that slashes the time it takes to search a person's genome for disease-causing variations from weeks to hours.

"It took around 13 years and $3 billion to sequence the first human genome," says Peter White, PhD, principal investigator and director of the Biomedical Genomics Core at Nationwide Children's. "Now, even the smallest research groups can complete genomic sequencing in a matter of days."

The challenge then becomes analyzing the billions of data points that come from sequencing a genome. White and his team developed a computational pipeline called "Churchill" to overcome these challenges. By using novel computational techniques, Churchill efficiently analyzes a whole genome sample in as little as 90 minutes.

This project was supported by the Biopathology Center. | Read more

Did You Know?

ResearchMatch has more than 9,500 registered volunteers in Ohio that are interested in participating in clinical research studies. That's nearly 13% of all registered volunteers in the United States.

Are you using ResearchMatch to recruit participants for your study?

GRANTS & FUNDING

RFA: Translational Therapeutics Voucher Support

The purpose of these vouchers is to provide funding support to investigators who require assistance from Translational Therapeutics Core resources (Pharmacoanalytical Shared Resource, Comparative Animal Core, and Medicinal Chemistry Shared Resource) to generate data for new or ongoing projects with the ultimate goal of obtaining additional funding to support future human clinical trials.

This program will provide vouchers for up to $4,000 per investigator (matching 1:1) for such projects. | Learn more

RFA: Community Engagement Voucher Program coming soon

The Community Engagement Program is pleased to announce a voucher support award for community-engaged research and partnership-building proposals. The awards aim to facilitate community-centered projects that include collaborative teams of researchers and community members.

Vouchers may be requested in amounts up to $3000. | Learn more

EDUCATION & TRAINING
Tools of the Trade: Research Participation

The Education and Training and Recruitment and Retention programs will host "Tools of the Trade: Research Participation" on May 28, 2015 from 1:00pm - 4:45pm.

The goal of every clinical research study is one that is fully recruited with high retention. This program is designed to introduce researchers to the resources that are available to plan and implement successful recruitment and retention strategies.

Good Clinical Practices (US FDA Focus)

Investigators and key personnel who participate in the design, conduct, and/or reporting of research involving human subjects at Ohio State must complete training in human subjects protection.

The CITI Basic and Refresher Human Research Courses are used to meet this requirement. Sponsors or funding agencies may also require researchers who conduct clinical research to demonstrate knowledge of good clinical practices. The CITI Good Clinical Practice (US FDA Focus) Course can be used to meet this requirement. | Learn more

College of Pharmacy Research Day

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy will host its annual Research Day and celebrate its graduate program's 75-year anniversary April 7, 2015, from 12:30pm - 4:30pm on the second floor of the Biological Sciences/Pharmacy Library and in Parks Hall room 103.

This year's keynote speaker is Jinn Wu, alumnus and vice president and chief scientific officer of WuXi AppTec's laboratory testing division, who will present "Life Prior to, During, and After Studies at OSU, College of Pharmacy." | Learn more

The 14th Annual OSUWMC Trainee Research Day

The 14th Annual OSUWMC College of Medicine Trainee Research Day is scheduled to take place April 15-16, 2015. Trainees are encouraged to participate in the poster sessions to gain valuable feedback on their research from faculty judges. | Learn more

ACTS & AFMR Translational Science 2015 Meeting

The Translational Science 2015 Meeting, April 16-18, 2015, is jointly sponsored by the Association for Clinical and Translational Science (ACTS) and American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR).

Also participating in the annual meeting this year is Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Research Design (BERD), and the Clinical Research Forum (CR Forum) and their pre-doctoral scholars. | Learn more

How are we doing?

"I was pleased to find that in addition to pilot funding, the CCTS provides statistical design and biomedical informatics support for research. CCTS pilot funds helped to kick start my career as a young investigator."

TOOLKIT RESOURCES

Data Management Planning Tool (DMP Tool)

A Data Management Plan defines the responsibilities related to the entry, ownership, sharing, validation, editing, and storage of primary research data. It must not only reflect the requirements of the protocol/project but also comply with applicable institutional, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.

The Data Management Planning Tool (DMP Tool) details your agency's expectations, has suggested language for REDCap, and exports a properly formatted plan. | Learn more

Accelerated contracting through the ACTA

Contract negotiations are a complex process and are often identified as a major barrier to efficient study initiation. A 2010 CTSA Contracts Processing study showed that an average negotiation time of 103 days would be reduced to 73 days with a "master agreement."

The CTSA Master Contracts Working Group collaborated with industry and the University Industry Demonstration Partnership to develop the Accelerated Clinical Trial Agreement (ACTA). The ACTA is a standardized clinical trial agreement to be used (voluntarily) by each participating institution and sponsor to reduce contract negotiations for industry sponsored, multi-site Phase 2b and Phase 3 clinical trials.

Investigators at Ohio State are welcome use the ACTA to minimize clinical trial contracting delays. Please visit the ACTA website for more information.
