Moving Research Forward in 2013

A letter from Dr. Jackson about research in the new year.

Dear CCTS Members,

To meet the unique challenges associated with an institutional emphasis on translational science, 5 years ago OSU established the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS). Since then we have made great strides towards building a clinical and translational science community as demonstrated by

  • 1800 faculty and staff CCTS members representing all 14 colleges and NCH;
  • More than 100 new scientific teams created from across 80 research disciplines, all 14 colleges, 15 institutes and centers, NCH, 8 universities, and 6 community partners;
  • 70% of investigators state they are interested in having their research be more translational;
  • 86% reported that translational science is encouraged and supported at OSU;
  • 132 faculty and trainees have enrolled in the original foundational CCTS curriculum, the MPH in Clinical and Translational Science;
  • 980 unique investigators received shared resources and access to scientific expertise;
  • Investigators acknowledged CCTS support in more than 720 publications.

Looking forward to the next 5 years, we have reaffirmed our commitment to you, the clinical and translational scientific community, to support a collaborative and innovative culture, and provide a clinical and translational infrastructure, and training and career development programs, in order to "catalyze teams and innovations through the creation of an environment that fosters translation of knowledge to applications that improve health".

Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year,

Rebecca

  • Earliest Funding Start Date - June 17

Personalized Genomics Interactive Forum at COSI
WOSU at COSI will host "Communicating Personalized Genomics: A Deliberative Forum" on January 31 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Joe Palca, NPR science correspondent, will moderate the panel. Attendees are encourages to participate in the panel discussion and are invited to a free reception at COSI immediately after the event.

This interactive forum about the challenged and opportunities for communicating the science of personalized genomics will take place January 31 with seating beginning at 4 p.m.

Please RSVP to [email protected] by January 25 to reserve a seat.

Call for Poster Abstracts

Abstracts now being accepted for posters for the 4th Annual OSU CCTS Scientific Meeting, held in conjunction with the 5th Annual Appalachian Health Summit.

The theme of conference is: Building Healthy Communities.

The conference will be held at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center.

Click here to submit your research abstract. There is no fee to attend the conference.

College of Medicine Seminars
Throughout 2013, OSU's College of Medicine is offering a collection of seminars and other educational opportunities.

View the complete list of seminars here .

Congratulations to new KL2 Scholars
Jeffrey Deiuliis, PhD, Alison Norris, MD, PhD, and Nahla Zaghloul, MD, were announced as three new KL2 Scholars.

The KL2 program is a mentored career development award for junior faculty and research scientists working in the area of clinical and translational science.

The KL2 awards give researchers salary support to enable them to devote 75% of their time to a research project as well as funds for research materials.

Glaucoma Research developing more sensitive screening tool
An assistant professor at the College of Optometry, is leading research to find a more sensitive screening tool for glaucoma.

Andrew Hartwick, OD, PhD, and his team recently discovered a cell in the retina that would catch glaucoma earlier and more accurately. Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness in the world, affects 2.2 million Americans.

Hartwick applied for and received KL2 funding from the CCTS. It is hopefully that this research could lead to a clinical test that is used in conjunction with the tonometry test, another common in-office test that measures the pressure of the fluid inside the eye.

REDCap Training

CCTS Research Informatics Services will be conducting the following training sessions for REDCap.

  • Advanced REDCap Training - Friday, February 22 at 11:00 a.m. in 240 Prior Health Sciences Library.

    The focus areas will be: data comparison, data quality, graphical view & stats, and parent/child databases. There is a $50 fee per person for this session and registration is required
Changes to registration & result reporting with ClinicalTrials.gov
Research that uses www.clinicaltrials.gov is required to meet specific requirements related to registration and result reporting.

The Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 (FDAA or US Public Law 110-85) requires mandatory registration and results reporting for relevant clinical trials.

The individual who initiates and conducts the study, has access and control over the data and the right to publish the results is deemed the "Sponsor-Investigator." This individual is responsible for registering the protocol record, updating the record every six months and entering final results within 12 months.

Full information can be found on the CCTS website.

Faculty / Staff Highlight
Type 1 diabetes research in animals may lead to new therapies for pets, and possibly people.

Christopher A. Adin, DVM, is focused on researching pancreatic islet cell transplantation. The hope is that cell transplantation will allow patients with type 1 diabetes to once again produce their own insulin.

Adin received a KL2 Career Development Award from the CCTS.
