Shelterhouse gets a Vegetable Garden due to Thoughtful Volunteers

Above is a photo of the beautiful vegetable garden at Shelterhouse. The Gleaner Life Insurance Society for their "Join Hands Day Activity" and the youth members of the Gordonville United Methodist Church planted it for us.

Thank you so much!

Shelterhouse 100 Men Campaign

Sometimes it is hard for men to join in the fight against family violence.

Shelterhouse has launched a campaign for the third year in a row to engage men to take a stand against domestic and sexual violence.

Now through September 13, join Chief Clifford Block and other men in our community in defining manhood as the strength that respects women and children and promotes healthy, equal relationships.

Welcome Shannon Cole -Tigner

We held a "Christmas in July" party recently to welcome Shannon Cole-Tigner to the Shelterhouse staff.

Shannon has a master's degree in counseling and many years of experience in a variety of settings. She will be working as a Client Advocate for us.

We're excited to have Shannon accept this position  and move from a volunteer member of the Gladwin team - to a paid one!

End of Summer Event
The End of Summer event will take place on August 15. This great event, held on the Shelterhouse  grounds,  supports Shelterhouse clients in grades kindergarten through high school.

We truly appreciate the support you've shown us with all of the donations of jeans, backpacks, and school supplies. Please feel free to continue to drop-off items this week.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING -FALL 2013

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

Would you like to become a Shelterhouse  volunteer?  Three
evenings of training are coming up. You will gain an overview of the issues of domestic and  sexual violence, Shelterhouse and our services.  Refreshments will be provided.

You will learn about domestic violence and sexual assault dynamics, safety planning, confidentiality, empathy and listening skills and have an opportunity to meet the staff.  More specialized training related to your personal interests will be provided after these group training dates.

The trainings are scheduled for:
Sunday, September 8, 5-9 p.m.
Monday, September 9, 5-9 p.m.
Monday, September 16, 5-9 p.m.

We look forward to you joining our team!

Please RSVP to Michelle Kourouma at Shelterhouse at 989-835-6771 or MKourouma@cdvsa.org.
