Updated Wish List

Do you have any extra outdoor patio chairs? We'd love to utilize them for our outside area. We have a table but not enough seating.

Please keep your eye out for a spare roll-away bed which could be donated to Shelterhouse. With 24/7 hours this would really be utilized.

Shelterhouse Educates on Television

Be sure to tune-in to MCTV for the Shelterhouse series that we've been busy creating to inform and educate the community.

Most recently we taped a show about our Advocate Services. You'll also find shows about Trauma, Girls on the Run, Dog Days of Summer, Safe Dating, a Mock Trial, and the SANE program.

Please click here to see the MCTV schedule. If a show has "view" after it you can even watch it on-line.

Thank You Jan; Welcome Shannon

On August 1, Jan Baumann, Shelterhouse Client Advocate will retire from Shelterhouse. Jan utilizes her talents, energy,  and gifts to serve the Gladwin community in her Shelterhouse role. She will certainly be missed.

Maureen Barney-McGuire, Courthouse Liaison for Shelterhouse -Gladwin shared:
"Jan's service to Shelterhouse clients has improved lives and increased safety for so many. She inspires through words & deeds and has been a safe haven for her clients, co-workers and community partners. Her legacy will carry on, after her retirement, due to the many connections she has established to assist our clients. We wish her the best in her retirement and hope that she enjoys her family, farm & artwork!"

 -

Filling Jan's shoes will be Shannon Tigner.  Shannon has a master's degree in counseling and many years of experience in a variety of settings. She lives in Coleman and knows the Gladwin area and resources well.  She has shown her commitment to Shelterhouse and our mission through her many volunteer hours.  She definitely has a passion for the work we do.  We're excited to have Shannon accept this position - and move from a volunteer member of the Gladwin team - to a paid one!

Good luck Jan in your retirement and welcome Shannon!
End of Summer Event
The End of Summer event will take place on August 15. This great event, held on the Shelterhouse grounds,  supports Shelterhouse clients in grades kindergarten through high school.

If you'd like to lend your support, we're now in the mode of collecting new or gently used blue jeans (youth-friendly), backpacks and messenger bags, hygiene items, socks, and school supplies. We're especially looking for items for the older kids since in previous years, we have had a great response with donations for young children; with fewer items for teens.

Please be sure to take a moment when dropping off a donation to designate that it is for the End of Summer event. Thanks so much.

Tennis Lessons for Shelterhouse Kids

For the second year, our friends at the Midland Community Tennis Center have made it possible for young Shelterhouse clients to learn the game of tennis from a MCTC pro for free.

Tennis is being provided in a safe, noncompetitive therapeutic environment for the kids of Shelterhouse thanks to tennis pro Karen Skorup.  Karen is great with the kids and they respond really well to her. The tennis group meets one evening a week,  beginning with a light meal for participants followed by lessons.

Providing these lessons has been good for the residential children; giving them something to do, especially since we have a tennis court on site. The lessons also help our non-residential kid clients to stay connected with us too.
