Bridge of Hope

Shelterhouse is excited to announce that we are joining forces with Bridge of Hope, a national program that links church mentoring groups with homeless women and children.  Our church partners are Midland Reformed Church and St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Midland.  This program is brand new, so stay tuned for updates as our community works together to support domestic violence survivors and their children.

Congratulations Deb!

May 31 was a bittersweet day at Shelterhouse as we said goodbye to Deb Pryce, retiring after 24 years of dedicated service. Deb has a heart for survivors and was always ready to laugh. We are sad to say goodbye but wish her well as she enjoys retirement. Thanks for EVERYTHING, Deb!!
Girls on the Run
Thank you to the 472 Girls on the Run (GotR)  Volunteers who helped with the Spring season; putting in nearly 2,500 volunteer hours over the course of the season! The RunWalk was fantastic with every girl meeting  her 5K goal. We're looking forward to an exciting Fall Season which will begin just after school starts.

In the midst of all of the activity, Alexandria Holladay and Leah Oard were honored with the The Coach Roni's Kid Award. This special GotR award is presented each season in memory of Veronica Galeaz-Holder, a former head coach. Alexandria and Leah are pictured above with Council Director Sara Jacobs-Carter.

Back - 2-School
School's out for the summer but we're already  thinking about the Shelterhouse  Back- 2- School Event on August 17. This great event, held on the Shelterhouse grounds,  supports Shelterhouse clients in grades kindergarten through high school. If you'd like to lend your support, we're now in the mode of collecting new or gently used blue jeans (youth-friendly), backpacks and messenger bags, hygiene items, socks, and school supplies. We're especially looking for items for the older kids since in previous years, we have had a great response with donations for young children; with fewer items for teens. If you'd like to make a donation for Back-2-School be sure to take a moment to designate it when you drop it off.

Leadership Midland Class of 2012 Adopts Shelterhouse for Class Project

We are very excited to be working with the Leadership Midland Class of 2012.

The Leadership Midland Class of 2012 is volunteering its time to raise funds for a much needed Shelterhouse storage facility.

In the coming months you'll see several fundraising events (including a golf outing) which they are planning. We hope you'll help support this industrious project. We are excited to be working with them. Learn more about the Barn Raising project here.
Volunteers Beautify the Inside and Outside of  Shelterhouse with their Labors of Love

In May, over 200 volunteer hours were donated to beautify the inside and outside of Shelterhouse!

  • On May 8, 16 volunteers from the Dow High Varsity Equestrian team planted 20 flats of annual flowers, carried brush from small trees that had been cut down, weeded and watered our many flower beds.
  • Then on May 21st, the New Tech Students from Meridian High School arrived with 9 volunteers. They worked in the residence washing walls, taking care of recycling, vacuumed upstairs, played w/children, and did some cleaning on the patio outside.
  • At the end of May, the Dow High Equestrian Junior Varsity team of 22 volunteers came to weed, help clear tall grass and light brush, did some weed whacking  as well as mulch spreading.

Thank you for your help!
