Gladwin Tidings

The Gladwin Christmas Party was a huge success with over 138 people in attendance.  More than 25 volunteers made this special night possible.  We are so thankful to all those who volunteered and donated; it would not be possible to host this event without your support.

Here in Gladwin, we are already looking toward Spring with plans  underway for the SAAM JAM in April. More details soon!

Christmas Cheer

Over Christmas we had 14 people in shelter, 7 of whom were children. Due to the efforts of staff, volunteers, and the community they all had gifts under the tree and a warm and wonderful holiday celebration. Thank you!

A Mountainous Donation

More than 4000 nights of safety given to domestic violence survivors and their families translates into a mountain of laundry. At Shelterhouse we estimate there are more than  800 loads of laundry washed in a year. Even with care, you can imagine the wear and tear that takes place on our appliances. We are very excited to announce the donation of three  heavy duty Speed Queen washers and dryers to Shelterhouse by a generous donor.

Paying it Forward

In the midst of Christmas items we found the following letter and donation. It moved us deeply; so we shared it with our Facebook fans. The heartwarming donation soon had 271 likes, 54 shares, and 32 comments spreading it's innocent inspiring generosity onward and outward. Facebook Fan Jennifer commented: If only, we all, at any age, could give our hearts so purely."

"Dear whoever is reading this,
I HOPE that everyone there gets everything they need and a very happy holiday. Here is a dollar. Use it for anything you need. Good luck."

We had a great turn out for the Girls on the Run 5K and everyone met their goals this past fall. It was great to see a lot of folks out for the Midland Resolution Run on December 31st too.

Our Coach Roni's Kid award for the Fall of 2012 season was given to 9 year old  Sandra (Sandy) Martin from the Plymouth Elementary team. Her coach, Sue Williams said that Sandy has an abundance of positive energy and she simply sparkles!

The spring season may be the biggest season ever with 25 teams in the running! If you'd like to get involved with Girls on the Run there is always a constant need for Head and Assistant Coaches. Please contact  Sara Jacobs-Carter at (989) 835-6771 for more information.

Shelterhouse Volunteers are a
"Driving Force"

Here's a little volunteer trivia fact for you that we think is impressive.  Mary Wackerle, our faithful transportation volunteer, shared that she tallied her mileage driving for Shelterhouse in 2012, and it totaled more than 1700 miles! That's like driving from Shelterhouse to Key West Florida!

Shelterhouse Life Skills Coordinator Hired

Sue Williams has recently been hired as a part-time Life Skills Coordinator. Executive Director Janine Ouderkirk believes this new position will help Shelterhouse to better  provide life skills intervention, support, and assistance to current residents and their families. Sue will be a familiar face to some as she has served as an intern too. Congratulations and welcome Sue to this exciting new position!
