Glad to be in Gladwin

The Gladwin Client Christmas Party excitement is building! Donations are coming in for the parent/child "shops" guaranteeing that everyone will find just the perfect present for those on their lists. Generous cookie bakers are digging out their favorite recipes, and Santa is even planning on stopping by. We are so blessed with a community that truly supports one another.

Eagle Scout Project Update

This past Fall, Robert Hill, an Eagle Scout Candidate  completed his Eagle project which consisted of building wooden planters around our driveway light posts and a larger wood framed flower bed along the Shelterhouse front sidewalk. It looks fantastic now and we are looking forward to seeing the structures in bloom next spring. Thank you Robert!
AKA Support
We'd like to recognize
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for its continued support of Shelterhouse and it's children's program. The Midland-based chapter has been an ongoing supporter of our programs for child clients, and recently held another successful American Girls' event at the MCFTA to benefit Girls on the Run programs in Midland and Saginaw counties.

The photo above was taken by Theophil Syslo Photography at the Dress Rehearsal for the American Girl Show.

Mission Moment

Recently we shared a Mission Moment from a client on our Facebook page.It was wonderful to see 138 supportive "likes" and eleven comments from our Facebook community. The outpouring of support even prompted the writer of the testimonial to comment back to the Facebook Fans. Below is the testimonial showing that change CAN happen:

"It has been three years now since I first walked into the Shelter and asked for help, 3 long years of learning, 3 beautiful years of changing.I have learned that nobody can change another, all you can do is change yourself and never give up on your dreams. Two years ago I graduated with a dual degree.
This year I landed a great job and got off cash assistance and last month I purchased a home for me and my children. It has been a long journey and without the support provided by Shelterhouse I know I wouldn't be where I am now."

Overnight Success

Have you ever wondered how Shelterhouse manages to be open 24/7? One mission critical part to our overnight success is volunteer Leslie Russell who faithfully schedules our overnight volunteers from her home. On her own time she emails and calls other volunteers to fill in a schedule each month; this service is a great help to us.

The overnight volunteers come in not just one but two nights a week. They staff the shelter, answer the crisis line (1-877-216-6383)  and help with middle of the night client needs.

Shelterhouse overnight volunteers include:
  • Leslie Russell
  • Claire Chavez
  • Mariah Conklin
  • Susan Dalgarn
  • Megan McBride
  • Jennifer Richardson
  • Mary Lynn Rinn
  • Peggy Stanley
  • Brittney Quider
  • Cheryl Zastrow
  • Barbara Kern

Many Hands Make Light Work

We are thankful to many groups who helped us as the leaves came down this past fall on the grounds of Shelterhouse.

For raking leaves, we'd like to thank:
  • Volunteers from 5/3 Bank
  • A group of 20 volunteers from Dow Chemical
  • Six young Adventure Scouts from Unitarian Universalist church.
  • The Dow High Equestrian Club (who came back three times!)
A special thank you also goes to The Dow High Pom Pom Club who came for a day of deep cleaning in our office area. They dusted, vacuumed, and cleaned windows -all the hard heavy fall cleaning that needed to be done. When they were finished they offered to rake leaves; which we happily accepted.

Providing a Safe Place

In a continued effort to provide a safe and secure environment for victims of domestic and sexual assault, many security improvements are underway.

A new metal commercial front door with a commercial closer has been installed  which adds to the security of our front entrance. The doorway is also now larger which makes it easier for the disabled to enter. We are  grateful for a CDBG grant which covers these two much needed improvements.

In addition, we will be installing three additional security cameras and replacing 4 older cameras with new starlight capability cameras. These new cameras will enhance the picture especially when there is less light at night. We are also installing an additional electrical release lock to a door to better secure our facility.
