SEE Change...As it happens
June 2013
Greetings!

Welcome to the Summer Issue of SEE Change Magazine!

In this issue, we explore the varied challenges of social change organizations - and herald their successes too. Stories on relative upstarts like SunDrum, Runa and Sappho offer insightful takeaways for those starting something new, while Shannon Simmons provides tangible and practical advice from the business end of things. Peter Ter Weeme discusses India's successful leadership on CSR legislation, an example for other countries to follow. And, on the other side of the continuum, old-timer The Esalen Institute reminds us of the need to pause, to praise and to take stock to achieve longer-term sustainability.

Finally, this special issue includes our Failure Report, a student project commissioned by SEE Change exploring that niggly thing called failure in social enterprise. The report delves into a topic we don't seem to enjoy talking about in this sector, yet discourse and exploration of failure, may, in fact, help us the most in our pursuit of success. So feel free to download, share and learn.

Wishing you a wonderful summer of inspiration, relaxation, dedication and, yes, success.

Mapping the social enterprise ecosystem: A primer by David LePage, Kelly Ramirez and Suzanne N. Smith

Mapping

As the number of social enterprises grows exponentially, so does the number of organizations being launched to support them. Although there were a few early pioneers - REDF, ENP and NEsST, all founded in 1997 - most of the social enterprise support organizations have emerged only in the last few years. Some provide a specific resource that social enterprises need to thrive, such as mentoring or capital, but many have developed comprehensive ecosystem models.

Learn about the various models to support social enterprise.

marathon
SROI is a marathon, not a sprint by Stephanie Robertson

For most people, running a 10k, half marathon or 42.5 kilometres is not something to be done the day after pulling oneself up off of the couch for the first time in months. For success, these races require planning, practice and perseverance. A vision for the end result is highly recommended. It's the same with SROI.

Find out which building blocks you need to have in place.

collaboration Four factors help ensure collaborations are effective. These include: networking for results; honouring stakeholders; openly sharing knowledge; and navigating the socio-political context. I'd like to zoom in on factor three - openly sharing knowledge - in this month's post.
