We are pleased to announce our new Executive Director of the Humane Society of Sedona, Suzanne Fuqua! Suzanne has been with the Santa Fe Humane Society since early 2011 as the Director of Behavior and Training. She has trained staff and volunteers in dog behavior, helping animals become more adoptable. She has also collaborated with the New Mexico Penitentiary to set up a "Paws to Pen" initiative. Suzanne holds a BS degree in Agricultural Economics with an Animal Science concentration from the University of Kentucky. She has a Certificate of Nonprofit Management from the University of New Mexico and is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer. Suzanne owns and operates Dog Training Solutions, LLC, that provides behavior consulting services to dog owners. Her business experience includes being the Business Manager of Southwestern College. She has served as a member of the board and volunteer of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, board member of the Northern New Mexico Animal Protection Society, and board member and officer of the Santa Fe Dog Obedience Club. The Santa Fe Humane Society, although much larger than ours, has similar programs and philosophies. Santa Fe has a low-cost Spay/Neuter program, discount Adoption Fee events, Thrift Shops, a summer camp for kids, and more. They took in over 5,000 animals last year, as compared to our 1,000 pet intakes.
Suzanne expects to start in early May. All of us at the shelter are very excited about her arrival! Welcome Suzanne! |

A $500 grant from the Sedona Community Foundation was given to create a Pet Food Bank. Pet food is now available from 9:00 to 12:00 on the first Wednesday of every month. The pickup location is in the lower parking lot of the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 680 S. Sunset Drive in West Sedona. This is the same location as the Sedona Food Bank, which is open every Wednesday. If you are interested in contributing pet food for the Pet Food Bank, we have donation barrels in several locations. In West Sedona, barrels are located at Bashas, Sedona Pet Supply, Paw's West Thrift Store and Safeway. In the Village of Oak Creek, barrels are located at Weber's IGA, Paw Prints Thrift Store and Canyon Moon Theater. You may also write a check to the Humane Society, but MUST specify "Pet Food Bank." |
"B's Favorites" Fund Goes into Action
| |
Earlier this month our first free feline Spay/Neuter Clinic was held, completely funded by "B's Favorites," a fund set up in honor and in memory our former Executive Director. The Humane Society's veterinarian Dr. Volkman DVM, and Vet Tech Jenn Desmond, spent their Saturday spaying and neutering cats from the area, along with local veterinarian and HSS Board Member, Jeannine Kinney, DVM from Oak Creek Small Animal Clinic, who donated her time. In total, 22 cats were spayed and neutered! "I knew how much it meant to B to help those who could not afford to get their cats fixed. Hopefully, with continued support, we will be able to hold future clinics," said Joanna Watson, Customer Service Coordinator. |
Test Your Canine Behavior Skills | |
1) True or False: Biting is a natural, normal dog behavior.
2) True or False: All of the following can be warning signs of potential aggression in a dog: a) a hard stare, b) tail wagging and c) extreme nervousness.
3) True or False:
Always correct a dog immediately when it growls.
4) True or False:
The best time to expose a dog to a variety of people, dogs and situations, is between 5 and 7 months of age.
Answers:
1) True. Biting is a natural dog behavior. Even well-trained dogs have a breaking point beyond which, if pushed, will respond with aggression. With proper socialization and training, most dogs will never reach that threshold.2) True. Reading signs of aggression in dogs is a first step in avoiding trouble, or correcting a situation with your own dog.3) False. When you suppress the warning signs in a dog, you actually increase the risk of a serious bite. 4) False. The best time to expose your puppy to loud noises, other animals, social situations, etc. is before they are five months old. This greatly diminishes the risk factors for your dog the rest of his life.A book we like for dog training is "Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.
