Principal's Message
June 13, 2016
St. Anthony of Padua

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends of Saint Anne Catholic School:

The end of the school year was much more tumultuous than anyone could have anticipated!  I want to extend my sincere thanks to our faculty and staff members, as well as our parents and families, who worked very hard to persevere through the disruption caused by the flooding and the remediation efforts that were necessary to keep school in session, finishing the year on schedule.

Even though we had to postpone graduation, it turned out to be a memorable event.  The eighth-grade breakfast and the graduates' reception were both top-of-the-line events and the seventh-grade parents deserve our thanks and congratulations for jobs well done.  The Class of 2016 is an exceptional group of young people who will be greatly missed by our school community.  They leave an inspiring legacy of academic and extra-curricular achievement that both Fr. Tommy and I hope successive classes will work to emulate.  All of us are expecting great things from them as they begin their high school years.

Although the rain has let up somewhat, the intermittent showers continue to delay the recovery of the school building.  A break in the weather will allow the start of roof repairs, which will include enhancing the gutter system to effectively channel rainwater.  Once the initial roof repairs are completed, we can begin replacing the interior insulation and walls removed due to moisture over the past six weeks.  As that work begins, the Dad's Club can then start on the installation of the classroom cubbies they have been busy assembling.

Changes are also in the works with our faculty and staff.  Moving on to new chapters in their careers are Michelle Matlock, Eileen Bartsch, Andrea Leach, Josh Kallus, Veronica Benitez and Donella Newell.  I want to thank them for their dedication to Saint Anne's over the years and certainly wish them the best going forward.  We have been interviewing very strong candidates in searching for solid replacements, who will be announced once the new contracts have been signed.

By now everyone should have received final grade reports.  Information regarding summer reading for students entering grades four through eight has been sent via regular mail.  Mathletics logon and user information for students entering grades two through eight has been included in the same mailing, which should arrive this week.  Any questions regarding grades or summer enrichment work may be directed to the office.

Before closing, I want to take a moment to remind everyone that the Jubilee Year of Mercy continues through the summer.  Today's feast is in honor of the Portuguese-born Ferdinand, an Augustinian monk who became a Franciscan friar to seek martyrdom, taking the name of Anthony.  A contemporary of St. Francis and St. Dominic, he was a mystic and spellbinding orator.  In his final years in Padua, where he died in 1231, he preached with great effect against personal enmity and personal hatred - enjoining all to repentance through genuine reconciliation of the heart.  Anger, bitterness and hatred directed toward anyone - for any reason - impedes our salvation because it draws us away from our path to Christ.  Likewise, if such ill-will is directed toward us, we cannot respond in kind, but must pray for the graces we need to forgive any offense.

As individuals, we can engage in frequent prayer, scripture reading and the offering of small sacrifices to Christ for the sake of those we believe are enemies - and for those to whom we may have been less than charitable.  For Catholics, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, along with the frequent reception of Holy Communion, can be extraordinary sources of grace to this end.  If we can begin to turn the hearts of our entire community toward the merciful heart of Jesus, then we shall begin to become the powerful instrument of evangelization we should be.

Summer office hours begin this week - Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM.  More information regarding the start of the next school year will be forthcoming.  Please be on the lookout for Newsflash instructions regarding sign-up for the FACTS program and tuition payment details.

In the meantime, enjoy a safe and relaxing summer - and try to get to an extra Mass during the week!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Joseph Noonan
Principal

Counselor's Corner

Elementary students finished the year with a study of curiosity.  We defined curiosity as "wanting to know more about something" and brainstormed how to have a "just right" amount of curiosity.  All classes agreed that poorly managed curiosity looked like being nosy, nagging with questions, or making impulsive (and possibly dangerous) decisions without thinking first.  We also agreed that well managed curiosity fosters a love of learning, including learning about others' feelings (empathy) and learning from our own mistakes (growth mindset).

Of course, we not only practiced being curious ourselves, but also noticed the trait of curiosity in others.

Here are the classroom winners of the curiosity award!

The President's Challenge
Physical Fitness Program includes five events that measure muscular strength/endurance, cardio-respiratory endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility.  Fitness Testing occurs twice a year, in the fall and spring. Testing occurs in 5 different events-Curl-ups (sit ups), Shuttle Run, V-Sit, One Mile, and Pull ups. The Program offers two awards- The National Physical Fitness Award and The Presidential Physical Fitness Award.

The National Physical Fitness Award

Mission Statement
  glass

St. Anne Catholic School calls young people to holiness and prepares them to proclaim and  live the Gospel message of Jesus Christ by educating and forming the whole person; emphasizing spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, cultural and physical development of every student.
