GMM 5th Grade Experience
Graduation Matters Missoula is collaborating with the National Coalition Building Institute to empower 5th Grade MCPS students. The 5th Grade Challege is funded by a $3,600 grant awarded to Graduation Matters Missoula by Graduation Matters Montana in the spring of 2012.
The programming and activities for 5th grade students will prepare them for the transition to middle school and help them begin thinking about graduation. NCBI will model the 5th grade training upon their other successful in-school training programs, such as Respect Club and the Building Bridges workshop.
The goal of the 5th Grade Experience program is to allow the current MCPS class of 2020 to transition into middle school with a stronger foundation of knowledge in the areas of peer pressure, substance abuse and appropriate romantic relationships. Studies have shown that risky behavior in middle school can lead to continued behavioral and academic problems in high school. Graduation Matters Missoula aims to bring Missoula's graduation rate up to 100%, and supporting students through the transition from elementary to middle school is a critical part of this process.
