MARKETING
The marketing committee was established in June to grow membership and gain visibility in and outside of Extension. We had a small part in the brochures introduced at Galaxy, where our first committee meeting provided lively discussion about NACDEP's benefits and potential benefits. In the year ahead, we'll continue pouring over membership data and comparing our benefits and prices to those of our sister organizations. We expect to make some initial strategic recommendations to the board by late spring. Let us know if you have ideas about what might attract your colleagues to NACDEP.

Call for Proposals - Behavioral Health Information Pilot Communities
The CAPE project will fund eight pilot communities to participate in a joint exploration of what communities are now using to gauge community behavioral health and how these methods can be improved. This includes an online survey of local health decision makers (broadly defined) aimed at developing a better understanding of where local leaders draw their information about community behavioral health trends as well as a joint shaping and testing of new tools to make the process more accurate and efficient.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
JCEP pro of the year, accomplishments, elections, 2016 exploratory committee
This column will cover a few things. First, there is a new opportunity for recognition, and cash, from the Joint Council of Extension Professionals (JCEP). Second, we have initiated an exploration of a possible joint conference in 2016 with our colleagues in the Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals (ANREP). Third, I'll celebrate our accomplishments since our 2012 gathering in Park City, Utah. Finally, don't miss the note in this issue from our new colleague at NIFA, Brent Elrod, the National Program Leader - Community & Rural Development.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR NACDEP Colleagues: Greetings! It was great to meet so many of you at Galaxy in Pittsburgh in September. This was my first time at a Galaxy event since the original one in Cincinnati back in 1997. I am certainly glad I attended. In addition to meeting many of you, I was able to see some very interesting sessions and to learn first-hand what a lot of Extension colleagues are doing. The presentations, posters, and informal interactions were all extremely nice experiences for me. Plus the baseball game at PNC Park was a real treat. I personally want to thank all the folks who planned and organized Galaxy IV for making it such a wonderful event in which to participate.
We have a lot of good information for you in the current newsletter. We have the spotlight on the Northeast Region, where a lot of interesting things are happening. We also have a lot of information about upcoming events in 2014. Happy reading, and happy holidays!

UDPATE FROM BRENT ELROD, NIFA
Greetings, It's my good fortune to add NIFA's Community and Rural Development portfolio to my National Program Leader responsibilities. I was delighted to meet the NACDEP members and program leaders who were able to attend Galaxy. As I shared at that time, I'll be administering the federal line that supports the Regional Rural Development Centers, a new Interagency Agreement with Health and Human Services that the Centers will help implement, the Small Business Innovation Research - Rural Development program, and the Extension Military Partnership with the Department of Defense. I also invited NACDEP members to keep me apprised of their respective efforts and to visit our NIFA offices when travel brings you to DC. A few of you have already taken me up on that offer, so know that it is genuine and open-ended. With enough notice, we can also schedule opportunities for you to present a seminar regarding your work. In addition, we're asking that you inform us of your federal collaborations at the state and local level. This information will help us promote partnership opportunities with our sister agencies. To say that I'm excited about the future would be an understatement. Your enthusiasm is contagious and the work truly matters. I'm very fortunate to be following someone who was as widely regarded as Dr. Sally Maggard. In the short time I've been filling her shoes, I've gained a better understanding of why she was such a fierce advocate on your behalf. You've all been so welcoming. The level of talent is amazing. And you know how to have fun! I look forward to growing the work together and smiling and laughing alongside. Enjoy your time with family and friends this holiday season.

NACDEP 2014 Conference"The Art of Reinvention"
June 22-25, 2014
Amway Grand Plaza
Grand Rapids, MI NACDEP is celebrating its 10 year anniversary! We will be honoring our past NACDEP Presidents and the work that all of our members have contributed to Community and Economic Development Extension. Furthermore, beyond reflecting on our past, it's time to think about how we can reinvent community and economic development by embracing new programs, engaging new audiences, and experimenting with new delivery methods. The 2014 conference will highlight the role of ALL Extension Professionals in helping address community and economic development issues. Ultimately, the conference provides a forum for Extension educators, scholars, researchers, partners and government officials to explore the breadth of topics related to community development.
The 2014 Conference will feature concurrent sessions and tracks. We are seeking proposals for educational and research presentations, workshops and posters.

How about $1,000 ... just for being you?
JCEP Professional of the Year (POY) Award
The Joint Council of Extension Professionals (JCEP) created a new award to recognize individuals who demonstrate successful interdisciplinary partnerships. The award seeks someone who has accomplished this task by working across different program areas and stakeholders for consistent programs of excellence. These efforts should show impact, though it can be at any level - local, regional, state, or national. Additionally, the emphasis of the award is on excellence and the expectation is that the winner will have done this type of work for a substantial part of their career.
There is one award for each of the six Extension Professional Associations each calendar year. So NACDEP members will only be competing with NACDEP members for this award.
The deadline for application for calendar year 2013 is January 15, 2014.
The NACDEP winner would receive their award at the association's annual meeting during the awards banquet. (Watch out early next year for the announcement on how to apply for the 2014 NACDEP Awards.)
Application Here Due January 15, 2014 (11:59 EST)

The NACDEP board is seeking someone, or maybe a few people, to document our history. To the knowledge of the current board, NACDEP has never had an official historian. In 2011, there was a bylaws amendment proposed to create a historian position, but that proposal was not approved by the membership. As we approach our 10th conference next year, we now have a decade of history to both celebrate and to document. Unfortunately, very little of that history is told on our website or elsewhere.
Therefore, the board is seeking a person to serve as our historian, or a committee of people, if that is a structure that would work better. If you have a yen for history, or you just want to make sure that NACDEP's story is better documented, then please contact me. Or even if you know someone who would be good, but might be too bashful to nominate themselves.
It seems that I'm constantly asking for more leaders. And the amazing thing is that members keep stepping up to the challenge of helping our little organization to meet our mission.
