NACDEP members:
Greetings.
I hope that everyone had a great summer and that all of you are now into the swing of things for fall. Just to help make sure that you are, we have a new NACDEP Newsletter for you. We have a number of important items in this edition, including some information about Galaxy IV, which is one year away. Also appearing in this issue is an announcement about two courses being offered by the Community Development Academy, updates from the Member Services and Communications Committees, a link to an article on Community Development in The Futurist, an introduction to "Maps and Apps," some background on me, your editor, and much more. I have been in this position for a year now, and I have had some feedback stating that readers might like to get to know a little more about me. Enjoy the newsletter!

Letter from the President
Bowie and Dylan both wrote timeless classics about it. Our profession and we, as Extension professionals, can't avoid it. The communities that we serve (though some may want to wish it away!) need to prepare for it.
Ch-ch-ch-changes.

NACDEP REGION SPOTLIGHT
Welcome to the OOHs, AHHS and Moos
Well now that I have your attention, can you guess what region I am talking about?
The great North Central.....
Here in the North Central, we cover the rust belt to the big ponds to the prairie to the heartland to the largest dairy farms in country. We take pride in our land, farms, businesses, and cities and without a doubt hold them equal to many other parts of our great country. REGIONAL RURAL DEVELOPMENT CENTER FEATURE
The NCRCRD conducts regular site visits to states in the region to identify major themes for its future work. Four major themes are:
- Innovation Diffusion for Rural Development
- Sustainable Communities
- Leadership Development
- Entrepreneurial Communities
The NCRCRD works collaboratively with land grant universities and other partners to develop teams to refine and implement these themes. The NCRCRD provides seed funds and logistical support for research and outreach activities related to the themes.

About a year from now, the Galaxy IV conference will take place in Pittsburgh, PA. So instead of the regular annual conference in 2013, the association will be holding "NACDEP at Galaxy."
This will be the best of all possible worlds. There will be five break-out sessions hosted by NACDEP. These five sessions will feature topics of particular interest to those working in (or interested in) community development. Meanwhile, there will be plenty of sessions which cover the wide range of topics found within Extension.
NACDEP members are encouraged to submit proposals for the concurrent sessions and poster presentations. These submissions will be evaluated by a NACDEP committee for consideration and placement on the general program.
There will also be tours, social events, and plenaries - everything that makes a conference an event a "must attend" event.
More information will be made available as important dates regarding proposal submissions this fall. Also, while conference registration will not begin until next year, early bird registration will be $450 for the full conference and hotel rooms will be in the $159-$179 range.
Keep up with the Newsletter and check your email box for more updates - or you can go directly to the source at the Galaxy IV webpage on the JCEP website (just go to www.jcep.org and click on the menu link for Galaxy Conference). Submitted by Michael Dougherty, WVU Extension

From Your Association Manager:
PAR is thrilled that the 2014 conference will be coming to the NACDEP headquarters in Grand Rapids, MI. We love our city & state and cannot wait to show you why we're "Smitten with the Mitten!"
From a community development perspective, many neat things are happening in our city. In just two weeks' time we will open our city to Artprize - the world's largest art competition. Art = Community. Art is the focus of the competition, but the main event is community. Artists take over the city, visitors explore and new relationships form. Communities open to new ideas organically. The community keeps growing, even after the event is over. Artprize awards $560,000 in total prizes. $360,000 awarded by public vote, $200,000 awarded by a select group of art experts. Check out artprize.org.
