Sage and Sparrow Conservation Area Addition

The Nature Conservancy of Canada and its partners announced the addition of 130 hectares to the Sage and Sparrow Conservation Area west of Osoyoos. Now spanning 1,350 hectares, the conservation area is a refuge for rare and endangered grassland species. Named "Kit Carr" after the property's original homesteader Christopher (Kit) Donahue Carr, this is the fourth parcel to be included in the growing Sage and Sparrow Conservation Area. Kit Carr adds a 4-hectare lake and mature Douglas-fir forest which is habitat for Flammulated Owls, woodpeckers and many other species.

They're back!

Lia McKinnon, Burrowing Owls

The Burrowing Owl Conservation Society of BC has been very busy cleaning burrows in preparation for a spring release of captive owls. This year we have had over 40 owls at our sites across the South Okanagan and the Kamloops-Nicola region--twice our normal sightings. This weekend we will bring together all the owls that have been bred at facilities in Oliver, Kamloops and Port Kells near Vancouver. We will release 66 captive-born owls in the hope that some of them will mate with the returning owls. If you are interested in volunteering with the burrowing owls in Oliver or helping to dig burrows, please contact Lauren Meads at lmeads81@gmail.com. To become a member of the society to help burrowing owls in BC please sign up on our website.

Spring Restoration Projects
The Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society had a busy March, planting over 500 native plants, removing 4415 kg of garbage from an Osoyoos wetland, removing invasive Siberian Elm from for Cawston habitat stewards, and enhancing salamander habitat at Summerland Golf and Country Club. The projects were undertaken with funding from the National Wetland Conservation Fund, Wildlife Habitat Canada, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and Habitat Stewardship. More project details are on the OSS website

Meadowlark Nature Festival Featured Artist
"Meadowlarking" (see newsletter banner above) by Bethany Handfield captures the whimsical joy of a family outing in nature. "As a young child, my parents often took me and my brother on trips into nature where we were allowed to explore our world with a freedom that seems lost now with the rise of compact technology...It is my wish that others share in that feeling when viewing this happy family here." Read more about Handfield's art exhibit and limited edition prints.

Statistics Canada Surveys Canadian's Engagement in Nature

A 2013 "Households and the Environment" Survey asked Canadians about involvement in environmental activities. Eighteen percent of households engaged in unpaid activities aimed at conservation or protection of the environment or wildlife. Households that included children and teens had 36% of people engaged in these types of activities while in seniors-only households had 11% reporting this type of activity. More than half of the households that engaging in activities aimed at conservation did so on behalf of a group or organization. Taking part in bird counts and similar activities were reported by 15% of engaged households. Seven percent of nature-engaged households reported that a member of the household volunteered their time to teach others about nature. Read more
