Tri-C honors more than 1,500 graduates at Fall Commencement Dec. 19
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) held its second annual Fall Commencement ceremony Dec. 19; honoring 1,596 students who petitioned to graduate.
"As these students walk across the stage in celebration of their academic success, they become part of the foundation of educational excellence built over 50 years at Cuyahoga Community College," said Alex Johnson, president of Tri-C.

Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland moves to June for Long Days, Warm Nights and Hot Music
Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a big move from April to June 2014, presenting three jam-packed days of concerts in the theaters of Playhouse Square plus free music outside on Star Plaza.
Twelve ticketed shows and a host of free outdoor events will be featured June 26-28, 2014 in what JazzFest Director Terri Pontremoli says is an exciting change for loyal JazzFest audiences and a fresh opportunity for new ones. "With a growing population downtown and so much appetite for new experiences in the city, it's the perfect time to introduce people to this wonderful musical experience with deep roots in Cleveland," Pontremoli says. Cuyahoga Community College partners with RTA for U-Pass Program
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) and The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will offer eligible Tri-C students a U-Pass for unlimited RTA rides during qualifying semesters.
"Through this agreement, Tri-C and RTA will benefit 30,000 students by increasing their access to classes and support services," said Dr. Alex Johnson, Tri-C president. Cuyahoga Community College selected for participation in Walmart Brighter Futures 2.0 Project through the League for Innovation in the Community College
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is one of 12 community colleges in the country selected to participate in the Walmart Brighter Futures 2.0 Project, which is supported by a $3.5 million grant from the Walmart Foundation to the League for Innovation in the Community College (League).
The project aims to provide low-income adults and older youth the skills necessary to obtain middle-skill jobs, enabling them to become financially self-sufficient. In addition, the project is modeled to provide participants with the confidence they need to know they've acquired the skills employers want, which will empower them to document those skills and communicate them effectively to employers. Multiple Tri-C Employees and Students featured in Who's Who in Black Cleveland
Mr. Kenneth Hale, executive director of Early College and Outreach Programs; Ms. Stacy Hutchinson, principal of High Tech Academy (HTA); Dr. Ormond Brathwaite, chemistry professor; and Dr. Valerie Brown, sociology professor were recently profiled in the 2013 Edition of Who's Who in Black Cleveland, a publication that celebrates African-American achievement in Northeast Ohio.
Also profiled were five HTA scholars: Rashee Brooks, Sophia Higginbottom, Celeste Kamasa, Marshay Wilson and Vic Young; and two HTA alumni, Melvin Hamilton and Nathan Johnson. Read more...

Spring 2014 Senior Adult Education Classes
For over 35 years, the Center for Aging Initiatives at Cuyahoga Community College has been a premier provider of senior adult education opportunities for individuals over age 55.
Based on the concept of providing senior adult education programs within an academic environment, the program holds to an education standard that recognizes the intellectual interests of older students. To provide learning opportunities, Tri-C offers a unique approach to senior adult education with on and off campus experiences.

Inauguration
Dr. Alex Johnson was officially installed as the fourth president of Cuyahoga Community College during a meaningful and heartfelt ceremony in November.
Dr. Alex Johnson was installed as the fourth president of Cuyahoga Community College during a ceremony Nov. 21 in the Metropolitan Campus Auditorium. Pomp, circumstance, humor and emotion marked the occasion.
"A Tri-C education must not just be about learning how to weld, or care for patients, or manage a business or even to succeed in college. It must be about those things, but a Tri-C education must go beyond them," Dr. Johnson said. "We have to be about the business of preparing successful citizens who situate themselves in the larger context of our society." Read more...

Cleveland Public Library's 2014 Drum Major for Change Award presented to Tri-C's Kenneth Hale
Kenneth Hale, Tri-C's executive director of Early College and Outreach Programs, has been selected as the recipient of the Cleveland Public Library's 2014 Drum Major for Change Award for his volunteer service to the community, and particularly for his time devoted to support children's literacy.
In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this award derives from a sermon King delivered to the congregation of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church two month before he was assassinated in1968. Read more... |
Tri-C Veterans Initiative Director Rick DeChant testifies at regional hearing of Ohio House Committee
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) Veterans Services Director Rick DeChant testified before a regional hearing of the Ohio House Policy and Legislative Oversight Committee Sept. 26.

Sen. Brown and County Executive FitzGerald host press conference at Tri-C to announce scholarship program for veterans and to urge Congress to extend the VRAP program
Dec. 16, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald hosted a press conference at Cuyahoga Community College's Advanced Technology Training Center to urge Congress to extend the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP) and to publicize scholarship funding available through Cuyahoga County for VRAP eligible students.
Rick DeChant, Executive Director, Tri-C Veterans Initiative, spoke at the press conference, as did Everett Chambers III, a Tri-C student who has received VRAP funds. Read more...

Tri-C Workforce and Economic Development Division Leaders meet with local economic development directors
Nov. 8, Susan Muha, Tri-C Workforce and Economic Development Division Executive Vice President; Michael Bankey, Vice President; and Terrance Robinson, Director, met with the economic development directors of communities in Cuyahoga County.
The group discussed current economic development and workforce development projects in Cuyahoga County and workforce training opportunities available through Cuyahoga Community College. Opened in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is Ohio's first community college and remains the state's largest, serving more than 60,000 students each year. More than 900,000 county residents have come through Tri-C's doors.
The college offers two-year associate degrees, certificate programs, and the first two years of a baccalaureate degree. The curriculum includes over 1,000 credit courses in more than 140 career, certificate and university transfer programs.
Courses are offered at four campus locations, two Corporate College facilities, many off-campus sites, and via television and the Internet.
