"I discover and rediscover the true meaning of 'yoga' when I walk into a room filled with unfiltered, young spirited, energetic, light beams that we call kids."
--Jessica Olson, long-time Street Yoga Teacher
Dear friend,
Here at Street Yoga, we tirelessly talk about how the benefits of yoga and mindfulness bring positive, lasting changes to young people's lives. But they're not the only ones receiving these benefits. Long-time Street Yoga volunteer Jessica Olson shares her experience teaching our Weekly Classes for Youth and how teaching kids has positively changed her life. Below is an excerpt from a Seattle Yoga News article she wrote earlier in August:"I discover and rediscover the true meaning of 'yoga' when I walk into a room filled with unfiltered, young spirited, energetic, light beams that we call kids. Teaching yoga to kids truly sharpens the 'tools' of yoga. Such as teaching kids is to stand in your truth because kids are experts at sniffing out the 'untruth' in a heartbeat. Teaching kids yoga comes from the heart and takes authentic integrity and courage. Holding space for our youth, encouraging them to feel safe and allowing them to express themselves creatively whether that means physically, verbally and emotionally means you, the teacher, better be able to do the same while simultaneously walking your talk." Through our Trauma-Informed Yoga Trainings, we equip teachers, care takers, social workers, parents, sisters and brothers with tools that they can pass on to the young people in their lives -- helping build resilience within youth and their own selves. There are a LOT of ways you can get involved with changing lives (including your own)!
Our goal is to make more ripples of compassion and reach more people, both youth and adults, in our communities. Join us in our movement!
With gratitude,
