Dear friend,

Summer is here! June 21st officially marks the first day of the summer season -- and International Yoga Day. Now in its second year, International Yoga Day is a celebration of how Yoga positively impacts countless of lives worldwide.

"...It [Yoga] embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. " --Narendra Modi, UN General Assembly 2014

Our biggest mission at Street Yoga is to make the benefits of yoga accessible to underserved populations. As our founder, Mark Lilly, passionately shares:

"To learn how to ground and relax and breathe slowly is a basic need, as fundamental as any. It's a huge disservice to think that these skills ... [a] bonus, or only for privileged people. Breathing helps you sleep better, be steadier on your feet, more aware of your surroundings. ... If you can help highly traumatized people feel safe and reduce being hyper-vigilant all that time, that has to be good."

With this, Street Yoga celebrates June 21st as "Accessible Yoga Day." We are excited to be a part of this celebration at Unfold Studios in Portland. Unfold Studios will hosting an all day event bringing to the forefront Yoga for trauma recovery, developmental disabilities and LGBTQ communities. This all day event will be offering classes that increases accessibility to the healing discipline of yoga. Street Yoga trainer Ivy Katz will be there to answer any questions about cultivating a trauma-informed yoga practice.
