MAY NEWSLETTER

Dear friend,

It is our great pleasure to introduce the Street Yoga community to the incoming Executive Director-- Richelle Harrell. Her first day with the organization was May 2, and starting June 1, 2016 Richelle will take on the responsibilities of leading Street Yoga as we continue to expand our Weekly Class program impact here in Seattle, grow our Trauma-Informed Yoga Trainings (Level 1) and increase our Advanced Yoga Service Training Offerings.  Richelle comes to Street Yoga with a great deal of program management experience, direct service work with the populations Street Yoga serves ,as well as experience leading and managing health and wellness training programs.  We're pleased to have her leading the Street Yoga team and look forward to this exciting new season for our organization.

Read a brief introduction from Richelle below:

When the Board of Directors told me that I was to be given the opportunity to become the new Executive Director of Street Yoga, I was thrilled to become a member of this amazing organization.  Street Yoga combines two of my passions:  youth and yoga.

I am passionate about empowering our youth to succeed in their lives.   I worked for several years as a Counselor and Case Manager for youth with experiencing behavioral, psychological and substance abuse problems, helping them to improve their educational outcomes.  I worked as a Teacher with youth overseas, in South Korea and Kuwait for four years and, when I returned to Seattle, I taught at Rainier Beach High School in the Brain Camp program.   Before that, I created a leadership program for low income youth in Camden, NJ to empower them to improve the social and economic well-being of Camden residents.   In addition to my work with youth, I have over 10 years' experience managing programs for low income and homeless people living with HIV/AIDS, mental illness and substance abuse issues.   In Seattle, I worked at the YWCA, managing the Dress for Success program and at Sound Generations where I was a Master Trainer for several programs in Health and Wellness.

Yoga has been an interest of mine since I was introduced to it by my mother when I was just a teenager.  As an adult, I deepened my practice, visiting India for two months and living at Swami Satchidananda's ashram/Yogaville for almost a year.  Today, with over 13 years of a committed yogic practice, I am a certified, level 1 Hatha yoga teacher from the Integral Yoga Institute.   The reason I became a yoga teacher was because I personally was healed through yoga.   I am excited to be given the opportunity to offer yoga to support youth in their growth and healing.

I feel truly blessed to be part of the Street Yoga community and I look forward to meeting you and working with you in the months and years ahead.

We are thrilled for you to have the opportunity to meet Richelle electronically, and hope that many of you have the chance to meet her in person very soon.

With gratitude,
The Street Yoga Board of Directors
