Dear friend,
In April 2016 Street Yoga has four of our Trauma-Informed Yoga Trainings scheduled across North America- St Louis, Seattle, Toronto and Chicago. As we prepare for these weekends of learning, community and self-study, I was reminded of a blog article one of our Minneapolis Training participants wrote after the weekend came to a close. She speaks of her experiences of racial trauma and yoga saving her life; and she ends by sharing:
"One important concept that has become apparent to me through my yoga journey is encapsulated by B.K.S. Iyengar quote, "Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured." The yogi understands that suffering is a temporary condition of this temporary life. Yoga contrary to Western forms of therapy is not focused on "fixing" an issue. Yoga is not just a form of therapy but a way of viewing our universe and our place in it. Yoga, as a philosophy, is a way to discern reality from myth and the goal is to move towards complete and radical non-judgment. Yoga is an important tool to alleviate symptoms of trauma that is now only starting to gain more momentum in Western clinical research. I believe that groups such as Street Yoga play an essential role in creating a more accessible form of yoga to populations who are typically barred from participating."
Reading her story, I was struck- again- by the world's need for 'care' professionals and those invested in healing work to hold space and facilitate experiences for people with histories and triggers far different from their own. Yoga and mindfulness for healing from trauma requires each of us to do our own internal work and our weekend trainings are a safe space to engage, no matter where you are on your journey.
Street Yoga's trainers, board and staff talk often about the privilege it is to walk along side so many brave and compassionate people committed to bringing yoga to those who otherwise wouldn't have access to it's benefits. We consider it an honor to watch the ripple effect; to see the seeds of the dandelion blowing in the wind, watching them settle and then grow.
With gratitude,

During the month of March twenty donation-based classes and four events were held in support of Street Yoga's programming. More than 500 members of the Seattle community came out to learn about our work and show their support. We're still waiting on donations to come in to get our final fundraising tally, but in the mean time we wanted to thank those of you who participated! And a huge thank you to the those who shared their space with us, donated raffle prizes, and to YogaLOVE 2016 presenting sponsor: Suja Juice for donating drinks for every single yoga class.
