MARCH NEWSLETTER

Dear friend,

It is a bittersweet note that I write this month-- I announce that I am leaving my role at Street Yoga as Executive Director in May of 2016.  I have accepted a position in Mumbai, India where I will be doing after program development, evaluation and reporting work for an organization that works to protect victims of violence.

It is both 'heavy and light' to be leaving a job and a cause that I love here at Street Yoga, to pursue a new opportunity, in a new place.  I look forward to sharing the tools that Street Yoga has taught me, and that we teach our students, with the people I meet in Mumbai.

It has been a great pleasure to serve all of you as the director of Street Yoga for this season-- thank you for helping to make my time here so sweet.  I greatly anticipate what's coming next for Street Yoga-- I believe that we are perfectly poised to move forward in the yoga service community in Seattle and across the country in big, beautiful ways.  The person who comes into this position next is very lucky to have the chance to work with, and on behalf of, all of you.

Here is a link to Executive Director Job Description.  Please share the posting widely.

With deep gratitude,
Jessica

YOGALOVE 2016 EVENTS
.
It's likely you have...
...experienced grounding and centering through a mindfulness exercise,
...found energy and vibrancy awakened in you through a backbend or vinyasa flow,
...sensed tiny or significant changes in your body or mind after just 30 or 60 minutes of yoga,
...become aware of the incredible power of your breath to focus, calm, or fuel you,
...felt the rootedness by pressing your feet into your mat in mountain pose, or
...appreciated serenity and stillness by focusing on the steady beat of your heart.

Chances are someone taught you the practice of yoga or mindfulness for you to have held the privilege of one of the experiences listed above.  At Street Yoga we teach yoga and mindfulness to youth who otherwise wouldn't have access to it.  The youth we serve have experienced trauma, including: physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect, homelessness, mental illness of a parent, and personal tragedy.  You know the impact of the healing you personally have experienced from yoga-- you can imagine how profoundly these young people might benefit from the practice of yoga and mindfulness.

Come, be apart of bringing yoga to youth who need it most.

YogaLOVE is Street Yoga's biggest fundraising event of the year.  In the past we have hosted a community practice of 108 Sun Salutations.  This year we're mixing things up.  Instead of holding one big event, we're holding a big number of small events.  Our partner studios across Seattle are holding a variety of donation-based yoga classes to support Street Yoga programs throughout the month of March 2016.

YogaLOVE's presenting sponsor Suja Juice will be providing free drinks at most of the March events. AND we'll be raffling off a great wellness prize at most donation classes and all the events.  Prizes include: Spa day passes, massages, cafe gift cards, yoga studio class passes, and more!

Check out the event below to see what's happening in your neighborhood and help Street Yoga bring the benefits of yoga and mindfulness to young people who need it most.
PAPER TIGERS SCREENING

Street Yoga is hosting a screening of PAPER TIGERS, a film that captures the pain, danger, beauty and hopes of struggling teens-and the teachers armed with new science and fresh approaches that are changing lives for the better.  The documentary film is directed by James Redford and Executive Produced by Karen Pritzker. Paper Tigers follows a year in the life of an alternative high school in Walla Walla, WA, that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students, and in the process has become a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families.
