On March 25, 2015, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET, OJJDP, in collaboration with the OJJDP National Center for Youth in Custody, will present "The Importance of Art Programming in Juvenile Confinement." This webinar will explore the development and implementation of art programming in juvenile confinement and highlight how it can benefit youth, the facility, and the community.

Trauma-Informed Juvenile Justice System

Please join the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice and the Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Collaborative for Change on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 from 1:00 - 2:30 P.M. (ET) for a webinar discussing Essential Elements of a Trauma-Informed Juvenile Justice System. (Please note that this webinar was rescheduled from its original date due to technical difficulty.) The webinar will provide an overview of:

  • Evidence-based strategies for identifying and responding to youth in need of trauma-informed services
  • Fostering a more trauma-informed juvenile justice staff
  • Integrating a trauma-informed model into juvenile justice polices and practice

21st National Symposium Call for Presentations

The National Partnership for Juvenile Services is pleased to issue a "Call for Presentations" for our upcoming 21st National Symposium on Juvenile Services being held September 27 - October 1, 2015 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the Wyndham Grand Hotel. To make this Symposium a success, we need juvenile services professionals to share their experiences and expertise.

  

Prospective workshop presenters are encouraged to submit proposals on a variety of topics including, but not limited to Current & Emerging Issues for the Juvenile Justice Practitioner, PREA Issues and Updated, Training and Performance Improvement for Staff, Implementing & Evaluating Effective Educational Strategies for Youth, Leadership Issues, Strategies for Understanding and Effectively Addressing DMC, Providing Services for Youth in Adult Facilities, and Community-Based Services. 

 

Call for Presentations

 

National Partnership for Juvenile Services Launches Online Journal

The National Partnership for Juvenile Services has launched the online "Journal of Applied Juvenile Justice Services." This OJJDP-funded journal will provide timely information to juvenile justice practitioners and researchers on topics and issues in juvenile justice. Topics will include effective strategies for working with at-risk youth; the operation of juvenile facilities; programming, such as educational, physical, and mental health and life skills training; juvenile justice trends; legal issues affecting juvenile justice practice; ethical issues in juvenile treatment; and leadership and training in juvenile justice.

 

OJJDP Updates Statistical Briefing Book

OJJDP has updated its Statistical Briefing Book (SBB). Developed by the National Center for Juvenile Justice, SBB offers easy online access to statistics on a variety of juvenile justice topics.

 

The following updates have recently been posted to the SBB:

 

  • National Disproportionate Minority Contact Databook now includes data through 2012. This application presents the national DMC data for the juvenile justice system and their Relative Rate Index Matrices that quantify levels of racial disparity introduced at various decision points within the system.

In addition, FAQs in the Juveniles in Court and Juveniles on Probation sections have been updated to 2012.

Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Fatalities To Hold Public Meeting

On March 25, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. MT, and March 26, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. MT, the Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities (CECANF) will hold a public meeting in Scottsdale, AZ. CECANF is a federal advisory committee established to develop a national strategy and recommendations for reducing fatalities resulting from child abuse and neglect. At this meeting, CECANF will discuss key issues related to preventing child abuse and neglect fatalities in Indian Country.

Technical Assistance Available for Emergency Planning for Juvenile Residential Facilities

OJJDP's Center for Coordinated Assistance to States is accepting applications for its 2015 Juvenile Justice Emergency Planning Technical Assistance Program. This OJJDP-funded program will assist sites with development and implementation of an emergency plan for juvenile residential facilities that aligns with OJJDP's "Emergency Planning for Juvenile Justice Residential Facilities Guide." States, tribes, jurisdictions, and individual facilities are encouraged to apply.

 

Applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on April 1, 2015.
