DHS Updates

Keep Kids Safe PA Website Launched

A new website, Keep Kids Safe PA, provides direct access to the information needed to keep children safe from abuse and neglect. The website is designed to serve as the hub for information related to critical components impacting child protection, including a link for mandated reporters to make reports of suspected child abuse electronically, training on child abuse recognition and reporting, information related to clearances and general information related to child protection. The website includes up-to-date information regarding the 23 pieces of legislation recently enacted.

 

Training Requirements for New Child Protective Services Laws

"Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse: Mandated and Permissive Reporting in Pennsylvania" is a free three-hour online course that provides information on the recognition of child maltreatment, the obligation or opportunity to report child maltreatment and the procedures for making a report of child maltreatment.

 

The course offers continuing education credits and is approved by the Departments of Human Services and State in accordance with Act 126 of 2012 and Act 31 of 2104, for mandated and permissive reporters.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF: Identifying & Responding to Caregiver Compassion Fatigue

Compassion Fatigue is the cumulative physical, emotional, and psychological effects of exposure to traumatic stories or events and/or suffering when working in a helping capacity.  It is a condition that affects individuals who work in helping professions.  Professionals working with youth involved in the juvenile justice system are particularly vulnerable to this condition.  The purpose of this presentation is to familiarize the participant with the various signs and symptoms associated with this condition as well as resiliency and recovery strategies for staff.

 

Learning Objectives

*  Identify the signs and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue (CF).

*  Understand how a worker's individual trauma influences Compassion Fatigue when working with the youth they serve.

*  Discuss strategies for preventing and recovering from Compassion Fatigue.

Hosted by the National Center for Youth in Custody, the National Partnership for Juvenile Services, and the OJJDP National Training and Technical Assistance Center.

21st National Symposium Call for Presentations

The National Partnership for Juvenile Services is pleased to issue a "Call for Presentations" for our upcoming 21st National Symposium on Juvenile Services being held September 27 - October 1, 2015 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the Wyndham Grand Hotel. To make this Symposium a success, we need juvenile services professionals to share their experiences and expertise.

  

Prospective workshop presenters are encouraged to submit proposals on a variety of topics including, but not limited to Current & Emerging Issues for the Juvenile Justice Practitioner, PREA Issues and Updated, Training and Performance Improvement for Staff, Implementing & Evaluating Effective Educational Strategies for Youth, Leadership Issues, Strategies for Understanding and Effectively Addressing DMC, Providing Services for Youth in Adult Facilities, and Community-Based Services. 

 

Call for Presentations

 

Desktop Resource Available for Youth in Confinement Practitioners

The National Partnership for Juvenile Services has produced the "Desktop Guide to Quality Practice for Working with Youth in Confinement." This web-based guide for computers and mobile reading devices allows facility leadership and staff to search across 19 chapters for information on principles, concepts, and practices in use in custody facilities. This project received funding and guidance from OJJDP, the National Institute of Corrections, and the OJJDP National Center for Youth in Custody.

Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice To Hold Webinar Meeting

On February 20, 2015, from 1 to 4 p.m. ET, the Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice (FACJJ) will convene via webinar. The agenda will include introductions and opening statements, including remarks by OJJDP Administrator Robert L. Listenbee; FACJJ subcommittee reports and a discussion/vote on proposed FACJJ recommendations; and discussion of the reauthorization of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act. Composed of members of state advisory groups on juvenile justice, the committee advises the President and Congress on matters related to juvenile justice, evaluates the progress and accomplishments of juvenile justice activities and projects, and advises the OJJDP Administrator on the work of OJJDP.
