Compassion Fatigue is the cumulative physical, emotional, and psychological effects of exposure to traumatic stories or events and/or suffering when working in a helping capacity.  It is a condition that affects individuals who work in helping professions.  Professionals working with youth involved in the juvenile justice system are particularly vulnerable to this condition.  The purpose of this presentation is to familiarize the participant with the various signs and symptoms associated with this condition as well as resiliency and recovery strategies for staff.

Learning Objectives

*   Identify the signs and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue (CF).

*   Understand how a worker's individual trauma influences Compassion Fatigue when working with the youth they serve.

*  Discuss strategies for preventing and recovering from Compassion Fatigue.

Hosted by the National Center for Youth in Custody, the National Partnership for Juvenile Services, and the OJJDP National Training and Technical Assistance Center.
