Mexican American Girls Program in Colorado Rated 'Promising' in Impacting Delinquency Movimiento Ascendencia is a culturally focused, gender-specific program that provides young females, primarily Mexican American, alternatives to substance abuse and gang involvement. Girls are recruited through outreach by youth workers and referrals. Services are operated by the Pueblo Youth Services Bureau, Inc., in Pueblo, Colorado.

After assessing the available evidence, the CrimeSolutions.gov team rated the program as "Promising" in reducing behaviors including damaging property; theft; and buying, selling, or holding stolen goods.

The "Promising" rating means there is some evidence to show the program had overall positive effects, but the effects were mixed or not large enough for the program to earn an "Effective" rating.

Ask-the-Expert Series: Improving Outcomes
for Court-Involved Youth with Co-occurring Disorders

The presence of co-occurring mental disorders among court-involved youth with substance use disorders creates unique challenges for juvenile drug treatment courts. Given the growing recognition that most youth who come in contact with the juvenile justice system experience co-occurring disorders, the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice (NCMHJJ) and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges recently released a series of three briefs and held a webinar on October 24 based on them.

The NCMHJJ is presenting a follow-up "Ask-the-Expert" series in three parts. Each session  will provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions that fall within the scope of each brief and to further discuss policy, practice, and treatment issues. The first, featuring expert Robert Kinscherff, Ph.D., J.D., took place on November 12, 2014 and is now archived on the NCMHJJ website. Subsequent sessions will be conducted as follows:

  • December 5, 2014 (2:00-3:30 ET): New Directions to Effectively Address Co-occurring Mental Disorders with presenter and co-author Holly Hills, Ph.D.
  • December 17, 2014 (2:00-3:30 ET): Providing Effective Treatment for Youth with Co-occurring Disorders with presenter and co-author Richard Shepler, Ph.D.
