To Juvenile Justice Service Providers

The juvenile justice service provider system has been significantly impacted by change in demographics, referrals, service focus, and the list seems to go on.

As you are all very much aware, juvenile justice arrests have declined and fewer of those youth are subsequently referred for out-of-home care.

While I believe we would all agree that this is very positive for many of our youth, there remains a need for court systems to have access to residential or secure service when community or individual safety are in jeopardy. However, we can no longer depend upon our government partners for the fiscal support necessary for us to continue to advance quality service.

Therefore we are looking to garner the support necessary to pull together our rich array of resources and support to develop the type of assistance we need from each other!

Our National Association (The National Partnership for Juvenile Services - NPJS) is creating a Facility Supported Center which will be member owned and member driven. We believe the following plan will position us to best serve the needs of facilities and staff. For those of you familiar with the Co-Op concept (as in Food Co-Ops, Day-Care Co-ops), this is the premise - a facility supported center for youth in custody, going forward referred to as the Institute of Applied Juvenile Justice Services (IAJJS).

The Pa Association (JDCAP) has recently undergone an organizational change and has opened our membership to be inclusive of all juvenile justice service providers in our Commonwealth who wish to join.

We will be joining the Institute of Applied Juvenile Justice Services as an association which will mean that all JDCAP members will automatically be members of this national group.

From our perspective, the benefits are just too great to turn down.

I am encouraging you to read about the IAJJS concept and membership opportunities within the attached document.

Also, I am offering my service to you if you have any questions or just need to talk about how or why you should join.

Please take a few minutes to read through this document and carefully consider the benefits either for your facility or your association!

DPW Updates

As you are all likely aware, the name for the Department of Public Welfare has changed to the Department of Human Services.

Effective today, the website address for the Department will change to: www.dhs.state.pa.us.  Please pass this on to stakeholders/families.

The Department of Public Welfare has been working hard to provide the industry and the members of the community access to updated information on the roll out of revisions to the Child Protective Services Law.

This webpage has been created to provide current information and will be updated periodically from this date forward. http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/forchildren/keepkidssafepa/index.htm

Please visit often for valuable information and updates!

Information Sharing and Updates

Many of you may have heard us talk about the desktop Guide. The Desktop Guide to Quality Practice for Working with Youth in Confinement is the product of a major collaboration between the National Center for Youth in Custody (NCYC), the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), and the National Partnership for Juvenile Services (NPJS). Its content covers a variety of topics essential to providing and maintaining quality care to youth in Juvenile Justice.

Please pass this information regarding this extremely valuable resource on to anyone who is looking to improve their practices.
