Webinar Series: Family Involvement in Juvenile Justice

Family involvement is critical for youth with behavioral health disorders who are involved with the juvenile justice system. Families need information, training, and support to help them become knowledgeable about the juvenile justice system and effective advocates for their children. At the same time, juvenile justice systems need to ensure that their policies and procedures support family involvement and that staff are trained to better understand the family perspective, the benefits of family involvement, and specific strategies for family engagement.

Please join the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice and the Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Collaborative for Change for a two-part webinar on working with families in the juvenile justice system. These webinars will highlight the family involvement innovations developed by states participating in the MacArthur Foundation's Models for Change Mental Health/Juvenile Justice Action Network.

Part l: November 18, 2014 (1:00-2:00 P.M. ET)

Model approaches from Pennsylvania and Texas will be featured. Presenters will be:

  • Wendy Luckenbill, Co-chair of the Family Involvement Committee, Pennsylvania Council of Chief Juvenile Probation Officers
  • Tracy Levins, Ph.D., Manager at Prevention and Early Intervention Services of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department

Improving Outcomes for Court-Involved Youth with Co-occurring Disorders: Ask-the-Expert Session #1

The presence of co-occurring mental disorders among court-involved youth with substance use disorders creates unique challenges for juvenile drug treatment courts. Given the growing recognition that most youth who come in contact with the juvenile justice system experience co-occurring disorders, the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice (NCMHJJ) and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges recently released a series of three briefs and held a webinar on October 24 based on them.

In follow-up to the webinar, please join the NCMHJJ for this week's "Ask-the-Expert" session with presenter and co-author Robert Kinscherff, Ph.D., J.D., who will respond to questions on Developing Effective Policies for Addressing the Needs of Court-Involved Youth with Co-occurring Disorders.

The session will take place on November 12, 2014 from 2:00-3:30 ET. Please register by clicking here.
