May 8, 2014 is National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

 

In Pennsylvania, the State Leadership and Management Team for the PA System of Care Partnership in collaboration with OMHSAS is sponsoring the 2014 "Listen Don't Label, Ask Don't Fear" statewide campaign to celebrate children's mental health awareness.

Future Conferences and Trainings

JDCAP is planning a 1-day training on LBGTQ sensitivity by The Attic Youth Center, a safe haven for LBGTQ youth located in Philadelphia. Lunch will be served. Watch for updates, a site and date will be selected soon. Seating may be limited.

Juvenile-Justice System Not Meeting Educational Needs, Report Says

 

The Bureau of Juvenile Justice Services has become actively involved in providing assistance to public and private providers who are working to improve access to information and support services for youth through the PA Academic and Career/Technical Training Alliance (PACTT).

 

More information will be shared on this collaborative project in future editions of the JDreCAP.

Two New Reports Available on Youth Deincarceration

The National Council on Crime & Delinquency (NCCD) has released the first two reports in a series developed from a nationwide study on youth deincarceration. Despite a 41-percent drop in the rate of youth in confinement between 2001 and 2011, youth of color continue to be held in formal supervision and state facilities at much higher rates than white youth. The two reports summarize stakeholder views on reducing youth incarceration and identify ways to budget for reform. Subsequent reports, to be released this month, will focus on supervision, placement, oversight, transfer to adult court, family involvement, and more.

 

OJJDP Announces Funding for Mentoring of Child Victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Domestic Sex Trafficking

OJJDP has announced the fiscal year 2014 Mentoring for Child Victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Domestic Sex Trafficking Initiative funding opportunity. This initiative supports efforts to provide mentoring services for child victims of commercial sexual exploitation and domestic sex trafficking. Funding is available under two categories: Mentoring Project Sites and Training and Technical Assistance. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on May 15, 2014.

News from the National Juvenile Justice Network (NJJN)

NJJN has released "A House Divided No More: Common Cause for Juvenile Justice Advocates, Victim Advocates, and Communities," a brief on advocating for a holistic justice system that responds both to youth in trouble with the law and people harmed by crime.
