MHJJ Training

JDCAP in collaboration with JCJC is offering this 1-day training on the MacArthur MHJJ curriculum.

Please note that this training is co-facilitated by Trained Juvenile Probation Staff and Juvenile Detention Staff.

Recognizing the need for comprehensive mental health training for juvenile justice staff, the Models for Change Mental Health/Juvenile Justice Action Network developed the Mental Health Training Curriculum for Juvenile Justice (MHTC-JJ) to fill this gap. The MHTC-JJ is designed to provide juvenile justice staff with basic information about adolescent development and mental health disorders commonly seen among youth in contact with the juvenile justice system, the treatment services often used with justice-involved youth, and the important role of the family. In addition, the MHTC-JJ seeks to provide participants with practical strategies for better interacting and communicating with youth in their care who have mental health problems. The curriculum was designed for use with a range of juvenile justice staff, from probation staff at the front end of the juvenile justice continuum to correctional staff responsible for youth in out-of-home secure correctional facilities.

For complete details, visit JCJC's training page

The training will be held at the Pennsylvania Child Welfare Resource Center, Mechanicsburg, PA on 4/2/2014

The following is a summary of the latest news, resources, upcoming events, and webinars offered by the National PREA Resource Center (PRC), which is operated by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency through a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

PREA Auditor Training Application Modifications

PRC will be making modifications to the online application portal used to apply for Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) auditor training. The changes will make the application easier to use and will better reflect the qualifications and experience of each applicant. In order to do so, however, the current application needs to be closed. This means that information in any incomplete applications will be lost during the switch to a new application. No information from applications that have been submitted already will be lost.

PRC will close the current application portal in early April. If you have started an application for PREA auditor training and would like to be considered for a future training class, complete and submit your existing application no later than April 1, 2014.

Inmate Education Video and Facilitator's Guide

PRC, along with Just Detention International (JDI), has released PREA: What You Need to Know, a 16-minute inmate education video along with a facilitator's guide to accompany the video. The video and facilitator's guide will help detention facilities implement the inmate education provision of the PREA standards. Detention facilities will be able to show the opening portion (three minutes) of the video during intake to inform incoming inmates about a facility's zero-tolerance policy on sexual abuse and how victims can report such abuse. The full video can be used to provide a comprehensive inmate education program that covers the definition of sexual abuse and sexual harassment; the absolute right of inmates to be free from such violence; and agency policies and procedures toward preventing and responding to it. The facilitator's guide will assist the delivery of the video and offers suggested talking points to tailor the information to the facility's policies and procedures. A complete transcript of the video is included as an appendix in the facilitator's guide.

Click here to access links to download the video and facilitator's guide.

Modifications to Investigations Curriculum

There has been a slight modification to the Specialized Training: Investigating Sexual Abuse in Confinement Settings curriculum, developed by The Moss Group, Inc., which is on the PRC website. Links to video tools that are referenced throughout the curriculum have been added. To view the updated material, click here.

New Resource: JDI Hope Behind Bars

PRC's partner, JDI, has released the first-ever manual for rape crisis advocates working in detention facilities nationwide. The manual, Hope Behind Bars, gives essential tips on delivering services to incarcerated survivors. The manual provides an overview of sexual abuse behind bars and addresses common obstacles to working in detention settings. It also covers the PREA standards, which call for increased partnerships between rape crisis centers and corrections agencies.

Hope Behind Bars is intended for all victim services providers who are eager to work-or already are working-with survivors in detention facilities. The manual benefited greatly from the wisdom of survivors and advocates and was supported by the US Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women.

The lead researcher in NIJ's HOPE evaluation discusses efforts to duplicate HOPE's model on the mainland

Hawaii's Opportunity Probation With Enforcement (HOPE) program uses a "swift and certain punishment" approach to discourage probation violations. An NIJ-funded evaluation found that the innovative program produced positive results. Now, as jurisdictions around the country look to implement their own HOPE-style programs, one central question arises - can Hawaii's success be duplicated?

In a new NIJ Journal article, researcher Angela Hawken discusses the challenges that jurisdictions might face and the keys to success when implementing a "swift and certain" program.
