As you are all aware, the PA juvenile justice system is moving toward evidence-based interventions and have referenced the work of the Carey Group as a resource. JDCAP is very interested in supporting these efforts and has become aware that some of our member facilities have begun to use materials available through the Carey Group for brief interventions. http://careygrouppublishing.net/bits-brief-intervention-tools

Webinar: Transition Planning for Youth with Disabilities in the Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Systems

This webinar will provide child welfare and juvenile justice professionals with information and strategies to improve transition planning for system-involved youth with disabilities and special needs. In addition to other topics, it will highlight benefits and services that these youth may be eligible for as they transition, including SSI and Medicaid waivers, and will discuss strategies for planning for housing and services for youth with mental health needs.

PREA Resources

Auditor Training

This week began the PRC's second auditor training, held at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina. The 40-hour training is taking place November 18-22. Nearly 100 trainees who seek to become certified in at least one PREA standard setting are participating, with several trainees seeking multiple certifications based on their qualifications and experience. Once individuals are officially certified as PREA auditors, the PRC will post their names, certification types, and contact information to the PRC website.

The next JDCAP Standards Committee is tentatively set for Thursday Jan 16 at 10:00 AM at the Abraxas Academy in Morgantown PA. During this upcoming meeting, we will review the Staff Development standards.

 

The next JDCAP Training Committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday March 13, 10AM-2PM at the Lancaster Youth Intervention Center. The training committee will be sent a proposed agenda in advance of this meeting.

Webinar To Discuss Youth Advocacy for Juvenile Justice Reform

On November 21, 2013, from 3 to 4:15 p.m. ET, the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) will present the Webinar "Recruitment, Re-engagement & Re-entry: Incorporating the Youth Voice into Juvenile Justice Reform." This Webinar will focus on how to include youth and their families in strategies for reforming the juvenile justice system. Presenters will share examples of youth advocacy for reforms through the Models for Change initiative in Washington state.

Webinar To Support National Discussion on Mental Health

On December 3, 2013, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. ET, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, will present "Creating Community Solutions: How To Connect to the National Discussion on Mental Health." Panelists will identify ways to bring together the mental health and juvenile justice systems to address youth needs using the Creating Community Solutions approach and highlighting how to build on existing community engagement activities to improve local partnerships.
