Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and most importantly - teaches individuals how to help a youth in crisis or experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge.  Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

YMHFA is part of the OMHSAS effort to help all Pennsylvanian's understand that "Mental Health Matters."  We offer this training to your staff so that they may learn some of the basics about how to understand and support youth with mental health challenges.  We believe that this training will help staff in their own lives as well as in their work with the individuals we serve.

We apologize for the short turnaround on this.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  There is space for up to 30 participants at each training.   RSVPs are due by or before August 30, 2013 to Cristal Fowler at crfowler@pa.gov for the Harrisburg Training and Kim Kofira at kkofira@pa.gov for the Scranton Training. Please provide your Name, E-mail, telephone number and agency you are representing.

NGI Webinar on Child Trafficking, Girls, and Detention

The National Girls Institute and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's National Training and Technical Assistance Center will host the webinar "Child Trafficking, Girls, and Detention: A Call to Reform" on September 10, 2013, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. EDT. Presenters Malika Saada Saar and Yasmin Vafa are staff at Rights4Girls, a human rights organization focused on gender-based violence and its impact on vulnerable young women and girls in the United States. This webinar will discuss how victims of domestic child sex trafficking are being detained for "prostitution" and how the victimization of exploited girls is hidden to law enforcement. It will also stress the importance of state juvenile justice facilities identifying and assessing for commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking within existing caseloads in order to connect these youth with services and therapeutic interventions.
